Overall Meaning

Exodus by Bob Marley & the Wailers is a powerful song that talks about the struggle of the Rastafarian community against oppression and their journey towards a better life, both in this world and in the afterlife. The lyrics suggest that the movement of Jah people, the Rastafarians, will face adversity and persecution, but if they stay true to their faith and trust in Jah, they will ultimately overcome the challenges and reach their destination, the Fatherland. The song references the story of Exodus in the Bible, where Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and towards the promised land. Bob Marley uses this story as a metaphor for the Rastafarian struggle, highlighting the importance of faith, unity, and perseverance in the face of oppression.

The lyrics of Exodus also contain a message of hope and empowerment. Bob Marley encourages his listeners to open their eyes and look within themselves to see if they are truly satisfied with the life they are living, and if they are not, to join the movement of Jah people towards a better future. He calls for the breaking down of oppression, the establishment of equality, and the liberation of the captives. Through his music, Bob Marley inspires his audience to have faith in themselves, in Jah, and in the power of the collective to effect positive change.

I saw him in concert in 1978 in Ann Arbor MI. Amazing concert...he was throwing splifs into the audience. His message is purely humanitarian. He's a wonderful human being.
