Turn on your love light
Bob Seger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Without a warning you took my heart,
You took it darling, tore it apart
You left me sittin in the dark, cryin'
Said your love for me was dyin'
I don't believe it, I think you outta turn it up
Turn on your love light
turn it on up
just a little bit

I get a little lonely
In the middle of the night
I need your lovin'
Make it all right
I need your love girl
Or else I ain't all right
I need your lovin'
Or else I ain't all right
Bring it to me now
Bring it to me now
Bring it home darlin'
An turn it on up now
Just a little bit

A little bit
Turn it up a bit

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bob Seger's "Turn on your love light" conveys the message of lost love and loneliness. The singer is grappling with the heartbreak caused by his lover, who has broken his heart without any warning. He feels abandoned and left alone in the dark, crying. Despite her confession of dying love for him, he is determined to rekindle their relationship and requests her to turn on her love light, urging her to try and bring life back into their relationship. He highlights his need for her love, explaining that without it, he feels lonely and unwell. He pleads to him to turn it on, even if it's just a little bit.

The metaphor "turn on your love light" became popular during the Blues and R&B periods in the 1960s. It was a widely used expression that meant to ignite one's emotions and express love physically, unlike the clichéd phrase, "I Love You." Bob Seger's song thus falls in line with the same expressions and emotions.

The Human Beinz' single, "Turn On Your Love Light," flopped in the United States (peaking at No. 80), but reached No. 1 in Japan. "Turn On Your Love Light", originally a hit for Bobby Bland in 1962, was later covered by Jerry Lee Lewis and the Grateful Dead. Seeger and the band did a fine job.

Obviously you never heard the 31+ minute Jam at the Fillmore in 1970 with Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, Peter Green and even more musicians Or Edgar Winter's version. Now talk about Smokin'!!! But being a Detroiter this was my turn on to "Turn On Your Love Light" by Seger.

Great one........I think you missed only one of the early album covers in this vid, I didn't see "Brand New Morning". All of the first seven Seger albums (which are out of print except "Smokin' O.P.'s") are all real good, it is a shame they are not available...
