When Bobby Bare first recorded this, my daddy went and bought it. My Brother, sister and I learned every word.We'd go out behind our old barn ( something most folks in the city didn't have, but we did) and we'd sing this over and over and over again. I still sing it today and I listen all the time too. My daddy passed in 2006 and my mama in 2012( they divorced when I was 13 after we had moved to a different house)My brother went to Heaven in February 2020 and I often ride by that house we lived in back then. My brother had set the barn on fire one day playing with matches, but in my mind I can still see. The house was beside our church and is used as the church social hall now. I don't think anyone ever lived there after we did. It was the best yrs of my life, only I couldn't see it then. Well, I see it now. Nobody could ever make you feel this like Bobby Bare. Thanks for the memories.

Grew up hearing this song. Coming from Illinois to Arkansas where my dad was from when it came on the radio my Dad would turn it real loud. My dad left the cotton fields of Arkansas in the 50s to find work up North. My Grandfather told him when he left “if they don’t treat you right well just come on back home and he finally did in the early 70s

If I played now we could copy songs from the internet like this one and be very popular. Recording a song on a cassette from the radio was terrible as you could not hear it very well.

The ONLY time in my life I ever heard this song was at a school talent show when I was a kid. The Coots siblings (from my little town) sang this. The tune stuck in my mind these 45 years. Jeez, I was about four or five when this came on the radio and 500 miles seemed so far away!
My dad had passed on earlier so all I had was my mom. She was fairly strict most of the time with me, but she took me to a diner in Sacramento and it had these little jukebox kiosks<?> on the wall and you could play a song from your booth!
I found it in the leaf that you could move back and forth to look for songs to play.
I begged her for a nickel and she gave me one and it played!!! Like magic!!!
She was smiling so huge at me, and me back at her!
I miss my mommy,!
That was in '62 or'63... Wow! Way to dredge up a great memory! Thanks!

We used to listen old classic songs while the swing goes to and fro in our porch and this song is one of our favorite..ahh its nice to trace the memory lane.. i missed him..he is now more than 500 miles away from home..he cross the bar 1996 and up to this date still playing this song of BOBBY BARE .I missed my husband.

@@andynorvell4953 I heard this song for the first time in December 2020. I'm already sold on this version. I cant imagine this being improved any other singer. I have no interest to hear any other version of this. Perfection
