Don't Cry No More
Bobby "Blue" Bland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't cry no more, wipe away your tears
Don't cry no more, baby, wipe away your tears
And I know, I know that your love is real

Don't cry, don't cry, I'm begging you
Don't cry no more, baby, I'm begging you
Every tear you shed tells me that your love is true
Hey-hey
You cried me a river, you cried me a sea
Now I believe without a doubt
That you really, really, really love me

You cried me a river, you cried me a sea
Now I believe without a doubt
That you really, really, really love me

Don't cry no more, wipe away your tears
Don't cry no more, baby, wipe away your tears
And I know, I know that your love is real

I don't want you to cry, no, I don't want you to cry

It's summertime and the living is easy
I don't want you to cry, no, please don't cry

Overall Meaning

"Don't Cry No More" is a soulful plea from the heart of Bobby "Blue" Bland to a lover who has been crying over their true love. He implores her to stop crying because her tears are proof of the depth and sincerity of her feelings for him. The song speaks to the universal experience of heartbreak and the overwhelming emotions that come with it.

In the first verse, Bland asks his lover to stop crying and wipe away her tears while affirming the intensity and authenticity of her love. In the chorus, he continues to beg her not to cry, stating that every tear she sheds confirms her love for him. In the second verse, Bland acknowledges the amount of tears his lover has shed for him, saying she cried him a river and a sea. He then declares that he now believes without a doubt that she loves him. In the final chorus, Bland once again urges his lover not to cry, but this time he uses the imagery of summertime and easy living to try to lift her spirits.

The repeated refrain "Don't cry no more" becomes more powerful with each repetition, echoing the heartache and yearning expressed throughout the song. The use of water imagery evokes a deep sense of emotion, illustrating how tears can flow like rivers and seas when love is at stake.

This song brings back memories of family gatherings at my grandmother's house

Remembering dancing to this at so many of Bobby's shows in Houston in the 1960's. Saw him several times at the Palladium Ballroom and other venues over the years and in his later years in Columbus Ohio and Houston H Festival just a few years before his passing. The greatest R&B singer of all -time. Who remembers his backing band The Joe Scott Orchestra with Wayne Bennett on guitar and opening act, Al TNT Braggs? Those were great times folks.
