Stormy Monday
Bobby "Blue" Bland Lyrics

They call it Stormy Monday but Tuesday's just as bad
They call it Stormy Monday but Tuesday's just as bad
Wednesday's worse, Lord and Thursday's all so sad

The eagle flies on Friday and Saturday I go out to play
Yeah, the eagle flies on Friday and Saturday I go out to play
Sunday I go to church and I kneel down and pray
And this is what I say, baby, "Lord have mercy
Lord have mercy on me", you know I cried
"Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy on me"

You know I'm tryin', tryin' to find my baby
Won't somebody please send her home to me, yeah

Well, I cried, "Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy on me"
I said I cried, "Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy on me"

You know I'm tryin', tryin' to find my baby
Won't send her home to me, oh yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bobby "Blue" Bland's song "Stormy Monday Blues" reflect the emotions of a man who is struggling to find happiness in his life. The opening lines suggest that the singer's life is filled with difficulties that are just as bad as those experienced on Mondays, despite the optimistic phrase "Stormy Monday." Wednesday and Thursday are worse, and the singer seems to be stuck in a never-ending cycle of misery. The lyrics capture the cyclical nature of the singer's life and suggest that he is resigned to his fate.

The song's chorus invokes a sense of hopelessness and desperation. The singer prays for mercy and seeks an end to his suffering. He then turns his attention to finding his lover and asks for help in bringing her home. The lyrics suggest that the singer's quest for happiness is the focus of his life, and that he is willing to do whatever it takes to find joy.

Overall, "Stormy Monday Blues" is a powerful song that captures the feelings of hopelessness and despair that can accompany the pursuit of happiness. The song's lyrics suggest that even in the bleakest of circumstances, there is always hope for a better tomorrow.

There are a lot of great versions of this song, but this is THE classic version, if you ask me. Bobby Bland's voice and Wayne Bennett's guitar are so classic, so beautiful and expressive. Simply the best.

Agreed

This, in my opinion, is one of the greatest examples of blues guitar accompaniment and a lesson to all budding blues musicians. It's not about volume or showboating; simply total empathy with the singer. A classic recording which has given me great pleasure for almost fifty years.

Bobby Bland's voice, emotion and phrasing are beyond great.  This level of talent comes along maybe once in two or three lifetimes. Wayne Bennett's guitar work is the definition of cool. RIP

J Baum

Wayne Bennett's guitar was innovative and copied by well paid musicians. I am sure other guitar players are listening to his style, touch and tone today and playing it note per note.

J Baum Wayne Bennett is my Uncle I don't remember meeting him he's my mother's half brother and I wasn't raised by her. He wasn't nothing to play with on that guitar. Had a younger Jerry Bennett that died before he had a chance to hit but from what they said was phenomenal as well. I wish I knew them growing up

Raymond, I can barely listen to this song...... It brings back too many memories... I used to listen to it all day long and just cry.

The Memphis Blues sound at its best! RIP Bobby.

So well recorded. Separation between the channels just made me close my eyes and picture him performing. Well done, whoever the engineer is............

This is without a doubt my all time favorite version of this song! I love the intro, the sparse arrangement that alloes you to really hear what ever instrument is playing but I especially enjoy Bobby's "smokey" yet velvet vocal delivery and of course Wayne Bennitt's fabulous guitar playing. The quinessential version!!!
