In The Dark
Bobby Sherwood & His Orchestra Lyrics

Till the tune ends,
We're dancing in the dark and it soon ends,
We're waltzing in the wonder of why we're here,
Time hurries by, we're here and gone;
Looking for the light of a new love,
To brighten up the night, I have you love,
Dancing in the dark.
The song "In The Dark" by Bobby Sherwood & His Orchestra was originally released in 1941. The song starts with the line "Dancing in the dark till the tune ends", which sets the mood for the rest of the song. The lyrics describe a couple who are dancing in the dark, and the dance will soon end, but they continue to waltz in wonder of why they are there. Time is moving swiftly and they soon realize that they are here and gone.
The next verse talks about how the couple is looking for a new love to brighten up their night, but they have each other's love and can face the music together. This verse is interesting because it talks about the power of love and how it can make anything bearable.

Very happy to find this lovely recording of Bix's gorgeous tune; I have only the Sherwood radio transcription of the tune-- not his Capitol commercial side. Bobby was a tremendous talent -- he deserved far greater fame.

Though I'd rather hear Bix's pieces as the piano solos they were originally (Ralph Sutton's 1950 Commocore recordings of the whole set remain incomparable), this is a quite beautiful orchestral version, with an excellent piano soloist, a nice oboist and a saxophone ensemble that sounds surprisingly Ellingtonian. Did you know that Bobby Sherwood was Judy Garland's brother-in-law?
