Drifting
Bodacious D.F. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wait, there's something that I missed.
I never felt the drift, cause I'm miles out and I'm searching for the ships.
Faint, I tried to swim back in, but then the current switched.
It pulled me out where the worry lost its grip.
I felt the ground under my feet, and I finally found where I can breathe.
I'm floating worlds away, and something has to break.
I fell asleep in the deep end. I'm still believing,
That all the world can change, and you'll still be the same.
You're never leaving, you'll reach in and cross out lines in the sand.
Now hoping my mind won't sink, with time to think.
Open my eyes and see, it's everything.
Now hoping my mind won't sink, with time to think.
Open my eyes and see, it's everything.
I look back at the wreck, and it keeps my mind in check
To move ahead when I see you never left.
And all of the times I find I don't feel you, I'm doing things for you rather than with you.
You said, That's Okay, but it's not gonna fix you. I already paid for the life that I'll give you.
So I put down the cross I made myself carry, and won't give my thoughts to things that you buried.
You said, Stop holding on if it makes you grow weary. I'll forgive all the wrongs and forget if you dare me.
I'm floating worlds away, and something has to break.
I fell asleep in the deep end. I'm still believing,

That all the world can change, and you'll still be the same.
You're never leaving, you'll reach in and cross out lines in the sand.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bodacious D.F.'s song "Drifting" seem to talk about the experience of being lost in the uncertainties of life and finding one's way back to stability. The singer speaks about being "miles out" and searching for "the ships," and trying to swim back but being pulled out by the current. However, they find a moment of clarity and peace when they "felt the ground under [their] feet" and "finally found where [they] can breathe." This seems to be a metaphor for finding one's footing and feeling grounded in the chaos of the world.

The singer also mentions a relationship with someone who seems to be a stabilizing force. They talk about "crossing lines in the sand" and not leaving the singer, despite all the changes that may happen in the world. However, there also seems to be some tension in the relationship, with the singer doing things "for you rather than with you," and the other person encouraging them to let go of the burdens that they carry.

Overall, the lyrics of "Drifting" speak to a universal struggle of finding oneself in a constantly changing world, while also navigating relationships and finding peace amidst the chaos.

This is a really good, underrated album! When the great "Flight Log" JA comp was released, & there was a lot of focus on including something from the many side projects &/or solo albums band members had done, why wasn't there a song from this album on there as well.....???

Apart from "Driftin' " which is a JA number by the way, the BDF album is pretty...average....

Is there a released recording of JA performing "Driftin'"? Later on I know that he performed a couple of the songs from this LP with JS, like "The Witcher."
