Body Count's self-titled debut album was released on Sire Records in 1992, and garnered much attention due to a controversy around the song "Cop Killer". Their label, Sire Records, and their parent company, Warner Bros. Records, defended the song; however Ice-T chose to remove it from the album because he felt that the controversy had eclipsed the music itself. The group left Sire the following year, and they have since released six more albums.
Three out of the band's original seven members are deceased: D-Roc died from lymphoma, Beatmaster V from leukemia and Mooseman in a drive-by shooting. Body Count's current lineup includes vocalist Ice-T, guitarists Ernie C and Juan Garcia, bassist Vincent Price, drummer Will "Ill Will" Dorsey Jr., and backing vocalists Sean E Sean and Little Ice, the latter of whom is Ice-T's son.
The band received their second Grammy nomination and later won the award at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021 for Best Metal Performance with their song "Bum Rush" from the album Carnivore.
Ice-T's interest in heavy metal stemmed from sharing a room with his cousin Earl, who was a fan of rock music and only listened to the local rock stations. Ice-T particularly enjoyed heavy metal, citing Edgar Winter, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as his favorite bands. Ice-T attended Crenshaw High School, where a few classmates shared his interest in the genre, including musicians Ernie C, D-Roc the Executioner, Beatmaster V, and Mooseman. Ice-T began a solo career as a rapper, and later decided to form Body Count with these friends.
Ice-T co-wrote the band's music and lyrics with lead guitarist Ernie C, and took on the duties of lead vocalist, even though he felt that he did not have a great singing voice. The original line-up consisted of D-Roc on rhythm guitar, Beatmaster V on drums and Mooseman on bass,
Body Count's musical style derives from the dark, ominous tones of traditional heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath and thrash metal bands such as Slayer, as well as hardcore punk's aggressiveness. According to Ernie C, "We wanted to be a big punk band [...] Our first record is almost a punk record." The presence of a rapper in a heavy metal band has been credited for paving the way for the rise of rap metal and nu metal, even though Ice-T does not rap in most Body Count songs and considers it to solely be a rock band. According to Ernie C, "A lot of rappers want to be in a rock band, but it has to be done sincerely. You can't just get anybody on guitar and expect it to work. [...] Ice and I, on the other hand, really loved the music we were doing, and it showed.
NO LIVES MATTER
Body Count Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I mean, if you go through history nobody ever gave a fuck
I mean, you can kill black people in the street
Nobody goes to jail, nobody goes to prison
But when I say 'Black Lives Matter' and you say 'All Lives Matter'
That's like if I was to say 'Gay Lives Matter'
And you say 'All Lives Matter'
If I said, 'Women's Lives Matter' and you say 'All Lives Matter'
You're diluting the issue
The issue isn't about everybody, it's about black lives, at the moment
But the truth of the matter is, they don't really give a fuck about anybody
If you break this shit all the way down to the low fucking dirty-ass truth
We say that 'Black Lives Matter'
Well truthfully they really never have
No one ever really gave a fuck
Just read your bullshit history books
But honestly it ain't just black
It's yellow, it's brown, it's red
It's anyone who ain't got cash
Poor whites that they call trash
They can't, fuck with us
Once they realise we're all on the same side
They can't, split us up
And let them prosper off the divide
They can't, fuck with us
Once they realize we're all on the same side
They can't, split us up
And let them prosper off the divide
Don't fall for the bait and switch
Racism is real, but not it
They fuck whoever can't fight back
But now we gotta change all that
The people have had enough
Right now, it's them against us
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter
America's always been
A place that judge my skin
And racism is real as fuck
Ain't no way to play that off
And in the eyes of the law
Black skin has always stood for poor
This is basic shit
They know who they fucking with
They can't, fuck with us
Once they realise we're all on the same side
They can't, split us up
And let them prosper off the divide
They can't, fuck with us
Once they realize we're all on the same side
They can't, split us up
And let them prosper off the divide
Don't fall for the bait and switch
Racism is real, but not it
They fuck whoever can't fight back
But now we gotta change all that
The people have had enough
Right now, it's them against us
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter
You never see them pulling rich people out of their cars
In their neighbourhoods because they know they got lawyers
They know they'll sue their ass
They can tell who to fuck with
Unfortunately, black or brown skin has always meant poor
They're profiling you kid
They know you can't fight back, but we about to
Investigators say they are reviewing body camera
And dashcam video of Tuesday's shooting
Police say that Keith Lamont Scott did have a gun
In his hand when an officer shot him
But a new picture of the scene shows something at Scott's feet
A source tells our Charlotte affiliate it may be a gun
But people in the neighbourhood say the
Father of four was holding a book instead
Officer Vinson was in plain clothes when the shooting happened
He was not wearing a body worn camera
But we are told that three other officers wore theirs
The department is under increasing pressure
To release police videos from the shooting
But the police chief says he will not do that right now
Because of the investigation
Don't fall for the bait and switch
Racism is real, but not it
They fuck whoever can't fight back
But now we gotta change all that
The people have had enough
Right now, it's them against us
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter
The lyrics to the Body Count song "No Lives Matter" express the frustrations and realities of police brutality and systemic racism in America. The song critiques the statement "All Lives Matter" and explains why it dilutes the specific issue of Black Lives Matter. The lyrics also address how the police and society at large tend to only care about a person's race and economic status when it comes to violence and discrimination. The chorus is a call-to-action to unite against those who benefit from dividing and oppressing people based on their race or class.
The second verse broadens the song's message to include anyone who is not wealthy, also stating that racial profiling disproportionately affects those who are poor. The third verse describes how the rich are rarely targeted by police for violence or harassment, reinforcing the message that racism and classism are intertwined. The final lines highlight the ongoing issue of police shootings of unarmed Black men, referring to the shooting of Keith L. Scott who was holding a book but was shot on suspicion of carrying a gun.
Line by Line Meaning
It's unfortunate that we even have to say 'Black Lives Matter'
It's unfortunate that there's a need to specifically say that black lives matter, as if it weren't inherently understood and valued.
I mean, if you go through history nobody ever gave a fuck
Throughout history, black lives have never actually mattered or been given the attention, care, or value they deserve.
I mean, you can kill black people in the street
Black people are often treated as expendable, with no one held accountable for their deaths, even if it happens in the most public of places.

There are little to no consequences for those who kill black people, with no legal or societal justice served.
But when I say 'Black Lives Matter' and you say 'All Lives Matter'
When I specifically state that black lives matter, it doesn't mean other lives don't, it's just that right now, black lives need to be acknowledged and protected.
That's like if I was to say 'Gay Lives Matter' And you say 'All Lives Matter'
When I say a certain group of lives matter, it's not exlcuding all other lives, it's just trying to raise the voices of a marginalized and oppressed group.
You're diluting what I'm saying
When you respond to 'Black Lives Matter' with 'All Lives Matter,' it diminishes and devalues the importance of valuing and protecting black lives.
You're diluting the issue
By attempting to make the issue about everyone, you're actually detracting from the fact that right now, the focus needs to be on valuing black lives.
The issue isn't about everybody, it's about black lives, at the moment
The issue of valuing lives doesn't mean other lives aren't valuable, but at the moment, black lives are at the forefront of the conversation and need to be prioritized.
But the truth of the matter is, they don't really give a fuck about anybody
The underlying reality is that no lives really matter to those in power, as long as they don't have enough money and resources to fight back.
If you break this shit all the way down to the low fucking dirty-ass truth
If you examine the issue closely and honestly, without any pretense, you'll realize the ugly truth at the core of it all.
Well truthfully they really never have
In reality, black lives have never truly mattered or been valued throughout history, regardless of what's been written in textbooks or proclaimed publicly.
No one ever really gave a fuck
There has never been enough widespread awareness or care about the value and dignity of black lives to actually create real change and protection.
Just read your bullshit history books

But honestly it ain't just black, It's yellow, it's brown, it's red, It's anyone who ain't got cash
The issue of not valuing and protecting lives isn't just about black people, but affects anyone who isn't privileged or wealthy enough to be protected by the system.
Poor whites that they call trash
Even poor white people, who are often thought to be privileged, are still left behind and undervalued if they don't have enough money or power.
They can't, fuck with us Once they realize we're all on the same side
If we all join together and realize that we're all facing the same issues and enemies, the oppressors won't be able to divide and conquer us anymore.

If we unite and don't let the oppressors create rifts between us, they won't be able to use those divide to stay in power and profit off our suffering.
Don't fall for the bait and switch Racism is real, but not it
Don't let the oppressors distract us with other issues or create the appearance that racism doesn't exist anymore, because it's still very much a real and oppressive force.
They fuck whoever can't fight back But now we gotta change all that
Those in power will exploit and oppress anyone who they think can't fight back or don't have enough money or power to do so, but we need to put a stop to that.
The people have had enough Right now, it's them against us
People are fed up with being exploited and oppressed, and it's time to unite against those in power who seek to keep us down.

Throughout American history, skin color has been used to as a basis for discrimination and oppression, rather than being seen as a valueless and superficial characteristic.
And racism is real as fuck Ain't no way to play that off
Racism and discrimination is very much a prevalent and insidious force in our society, and we can't ignore it or pretend it doesn't exist.
And in the eyes of the law Black skin has always stood for poor
The legal system has always undervalued and discriminated against black people, often assuming that black people are poor and unable to fight back against the injustices they face.
They can tell who to fuck with Unfortunately, black or brown skin has always meant poor They're profiling you kid

There are conflicting reports about what the man was holding when he was shot - the police say it was a gun, but others report that it may have been a book instead.
