He was born in Poland, but his family moved to the USA while he was a child. He went to art school in Japan but dropped out, after which he spent time playing trumpet in Japanese jazz clubs and making techno songs on his computer using trackers, which he would release on the Internet under the netlabel Kosmic Free Music Foundation under the moniker "Karl". He also released music on the netlabels "noise" (as bogdan and undercover agent) and "mono" (as bogdan and ice.climber). Eventually he became homeless and lived on the streets of Tokyo, or in the homes of friends, still making music on his computer in the meantime; the song Nihon de Homeless on Samurai Math Beats reflects this. He was signed to Richard D. James's Rephlex Records label. Many of his early music/demoscene tracks made it nearly unchanged onto his debut album, Boku Mo Wakaran (Rephlex CAT082 CD).
To describe his music is far from easy, with pieces nearing drum n bass or others avant-garde, electro pop, techno or even breakcore. Better defined as eclectic.

Its the only non-Terminator movie where he dies. I became emotional when I saw it at the movies because it made me realise that time passes and no one lives forever. Arnold was my hero when I was a kid, and seing him not be this invincible superhuman made me sad.

In my country, Arnold movies are often titled as "Demonic ____" to emphasize his badass status, like Demonic Terminator, Demonic Commander (Commando) and Demonic Destroyer (Eraser). So when End of Eays came out everybody was like "Yeah, of course it has come to this."

Remember seeing this in he cinema when it first came out at a late showing. I agree it's not perfect and abit derivative but it's very entertaining and I view it as quite underrated. As Oliver mentions in his retrospective; the scene with Arnie being 'tempted' is the highlight for me and I enjoyed the climax scene in the Church. Well worth a watch.

I know the director, Marcus, who was originally meant to make this movie and who worked on it for a year. He's a friend of mine (so that's my bias, but it also gives me insight into the facts about what happened during the preproduction of this movie). He got out of the project because of the dreaded "creative differences". Thing was: They promised 200 million, original places to shoot and free reign over the cast and script. But it's Hollywood - and Hollywood does not take risks anymore. The project was sold to different studios during preproduction several times, and all had their own terms and conditions regarding this project. They cut the budget repeatedly, changed the cast, took away the control over the script entirely and when they changed the shooting places from New York to a studio in LA, Marcus finally said "enough!" and backed out of the project. That's an insight info now: Asked upon what his perception was, he said "It will flop because of all the changes they made". It was ought to be his first big movie, so he didn't want to start with a dud, which is understandable.

And to put this nonsense about the "manifesto" to rest: It was a joke. It was written to make fun of an ego Marcus didn't have. And the set had fun with it. It was written specifically because he didn't took himself seriously. A disgruntled set-assistant, who failed at the job he boastfully claimed he could do and got fired, as it was reported to me, by Marcus (because said assistant, as I understand it, caused a lot of financial damage to the project because of his incompetence), went to the boulevard and sold this story as "true" and showed the "manifesto" (seriously... who calls it a "manifesto" in all earnesty? This alone should ring some bells that it was an elaborate joke to make fun of Marcus, Oliver) as "proof". All just to take revenge on Marcus and to discredit the project this assistant was no longer attached to. This made some waves that even got picked up by a boulevard paper in Germany. It was damaging to his career in advertisement, so he finally decided not to ignore it anymore and sued the paper. They had to print a retraction as a response, because it simply was not true. The whole "ego manifesto" thing was a hit piece, and I am astounded this nonsense of a story still persists 24 years after it happened. There was also a "Beacon Letter" about the incident, which explained it as well - I reckon you haven't seen it or asked the Beacon execs (or Marcus, who you could easily reach on facebook) about this matter. It's really not that hard to do.

Well, whatever, all that is just on a sidenote, Oliver. So, before you perpetuate such a lie, you really should do more indepth research into the matter at hand. Please be more thorough in your research for your future videos.

Lovely to see this film to be reviewed. It’s such a guilty pleasure of mine. Love it in fact and seen it in cinemas when it came out. Yes, its stupid sometimes, and the cgi is cheesy as they get, but Stan Winston worked on the creature design and of course it includes Arnold. It’s a mark of an era in my life.

12:12 Peter Hyams is a very underrated cinematographer, his low-key style of lighting is exactly the same style DPs like Roger Deakins are using nowadays - but Hyams was doing it in the 80s and 90s, on film and with no digital color-grading. While "The Relic" was a bit too extreme (I reckon the anamorphic lenses didn't help), "End of Days" (shot on Super35, much easier to handle in low-light scenarios) is probably one of his finest outings as a DP and some of the shots in the movie are majestic. I reckon Arnie didn't like it because he is used to be perfectly lit in every shot, while Hyams very often went for silhouettes. I think the visual style is one the things that stand out the most in this flick, along with the score. The script was messy unfortunately - even idiotic at times: calling the sniper priest Thomas Aquinas like the medieval scholastic philosopher is the kind of stuff only Hollywood people would deem smart. Also, while I am a big Schwarzenegger fan and I appreciate his attempt at widening his roles, I think the story was way out of his range: playing a tormented, suicidal ex-cop is something that calls for more than just charisma.

It's good to see this film get more praise because for the most part I've always really liked it. Arnold was 53 years old and was past his prime by the late 90's (his prime being 1984 to 1994), but this is still the best of his late 90's and early 2000's output, and I even prefer it to Eraser (1996).

I had just started college when this movie came out and always remember my bus used to pass a huge billboard advertising this movie on it. Still didn't catch until owning it on VHS (which I still have). I'm among that crowed echoing it's probably Arnies last good film. I thought it was a cut away from his usual stuff and facing off against the devil, an opponent that didn't look ridiculous against Arnies hulking size like usual. I've always been fond of this movie.

As always, another great retrospective. What makes it even better is the same as your Commando episode. Hearing about Arnie farting in someone's face, accompanied with the impression (just like the ice cream scene) was the cherry on top. I spit out my beer.

Looking forward to more retrospectives in the future, but I'm crossing my fingers you'll dig up some older Schwarzenegger videos you haven't covered, and maybe with a bit of the impersonation dash added to the pot.

That version of OMG is essentially a demo. Axl was messing with it literally while the courier was waiting to take the disc to the printing plant. I'm a bit of a Chinese Democracy nerd. There is a different version floating around and it's much better. All the vocals on CD were done basically in 00/01 and the version done around then, imo, is much better.

A great retrospective once again Ollie Harper. I had no idea the critics were so negative. I've always thought that End Of Days is one of Arnie's best performances, for range like... proper credit to Arnie for really showing the deep emotions about his dead family.
Also, when you said "...just facing off against some supernatural threat" I think that's a bit harsh too, because the threat is the actual Devil! and that segways into the most iconic bit of the film for me, being how Arnie's the only man in history to call the Devil a "fuckin' choir boy!" 😅🤭😆🤣

Always had a love/hate relationship with this movie, the whole premise was just so silly and I always felt Arnold vs Satan just sounded like a big joke lol. The movie is actually really fun but I think it took on a whole new meaning when you put it in its time. In 1999 people were freaking out about the year 2000 because there was so much end of the world nonsense going around so seeing this in Dec 99 really gave it a far more spooky viewing experience.

21:30 only reason why Y2K bug wasn't really an issue, was thanks to the work of software engineers fixing their shit in time.

It wasn't a apocalyptic event which we had to endure, it was a serious problem for transactional systems relying on correct dates and times. So people fixed it before it before it became a problem.

I remember the trailer for this in late 1999, one of the last times I recall learning about a movie just by the trailer lol Now so much information is online, you'd know about a Schwarzenegger movie literally years ahead of official marketing. IMO it was good to see him in a different kind of movie, this being his only horror film as far as I know, but it is still a truly dumb movie with an illogical plot, it felt like Michael Bay took the script for The Omen, stuck his usual trademarks in and turned it into an action CGI fest. I recall Huey from Fun Lovin Criminals saying on the radio that the Devil in the movie wasn't scary or anything, just petty, he just sleeps with people's wives and stuff, and I agreed when I saw the movie, although I also remember being kind of moved when the Pope says "If we would kill an innocent girl to save ourselves, we are not worth saving," because that's a good line of dialogue from a religious figure and the head of a church, I just wish the Catholic Church was more like that in real life (and that's all I say about that, lol). It's still a big shame Schwarzenegger's movies were bad after this, he could have made the King Conan movie before entering politics instead of all those duds, I'm sure we'd all rather have seen that than 6th Day etc.

I love in the movie where they find the priest crucified on the ceiling and the theory is he did it to himself and the big brained argument against that theory is "how did he get the last scalpel in?" As if getting the others in was possible.

I read a theory somewhere that Satan's ultimate goal wasn't Christine but to successfully tempt Jericho who reminds him a great deal of Jobe.

Satan's inability to tempt Jobe in the past makes his goal of corrupting Jericho a greater personal victory serving his fierce narcissism.

In my opinion this film is underrated, I feel that Arnie was wrong about Peter Hyams lighting. The lighting has to be dark to give it a sinister look. Peter Hyams is a great filmmakers with films like Capricorn one, Outland Running Scared, Timecop etc.

You know, for all this film's faults, I still enjoy it immensely and personally feel it's Arnie's last "good" (even though it's objectively pretty shite) movie. I mean how can you not like a film with Gabriel Byrne, Arnie, Rod Steiger & Udo Kier - that alone is a dream cast. EDIT Interesting that Oliver mentioned the opening action scene to discuss Arnie's health, he's so obviously doubled throughout it's unreal lmao.
