Some Say
Bonnie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some say I got devil
Some say I got angel
But I'm just a girl in trouble
I don't think I'm in danger
Don't think I'm in danger
No, I know I'm not in danger
But some have tried to sell me
All kinds of things to save me
From hurting like a woman, and crying like a baby
Something like a woman, crying like a baby

And all the things that I have seen
Qualify me for a part in your dream
Qualify me for this dream

And though I'd like to tell it
Exactly how I feel it
Somehow the music
Hides it and conceals it
Hides it and conceals it
Oh, it hides

And all the things that I have seen
Can be hidden in a part of my dream
Gonna hide it in my dream

Some say I've got devil
Some say I got angel
But I'm just this girl in trouble
I don't think I'm in danger

No I'm not in danger
No, I know I'm not in danger

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bonnie's song "Some Say" are open to interpretation, but the general theme of the song seems to be about the struggle of a woman trying to find her identity and place in the world. The first few lines suggest that people have different opinions about her, some see her as an angel while others see her as a devil. However, she is just a girl in trouble who does not believe she is in danger. She does not need anyone to save her, but some have tried to sell her things that they believe will make her stronger.

The chorus seems to suggest that the things she has been through have prepared her for something bigger, perhaps a role in a dream or some sort of destiny. She recognizes that she has seen a lot of things, and this makes her qualified for whatever may come her way. She wants to express her feelings, but finds that music is the only way she can do so because it hides and conceals her emotions.

The final lines repeat the sentiment of the first few lines, with the girl asserting that she is neither an angel nor a devil, but just a girl in trouble who is not in danger. Overall, the song seems to be a reflection on the struggle of finding one's place in the world as a woman who may often be misunderstood or underestimated.

Some say love, it is a river, that drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor, that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower, and you, its only seed
It's the heart afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking, that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose

A powerful yet tender and mellifluous song that Amanda McBroom wrote so well that nobody seems to know how to ruin its perfomance. I have listened to a variety of its versions and have a difficulty pointing out one that I didn't fall in love with! Recently heard and was wowed by Conway Twitty's country-style offering. Having said that, to me Bette Midler's remains the flagship of the bunch.
