What Are You
Bonnie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What are you waiting for? it must be me
To take you over my knee and spank you mercilessly
I can do that, oh, you'll see
And every day will be like free
And sleep, adventure you will see
On a bench, with your twisted fingers in me
In the rain, with my sundress torn off of me
Sliding down grassy slopes where we can be alone
You say I am evil, you know that I'm stupid
I don't appear giving and I don't appear lucid
Yet I give you all
The truth is, I give you everything
The lyrics to "What Are You" by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Matt Sweeney paint a vivid picture of a dominant/submissive relationship, with the singer questioning why their partner is waiting for anyone else but them. The song takes a turn towards BDSM when the singer offers to physically discipline their partner, and describes various scenarios of intimacy and adventure, emphasizing their dedication to providing everything for their partner. Despite being seen as evil and foolish by some, the singer truly gives their all to the relationship.
The song is a confronting exploration of power dynamics and desire, with unsettling undertones that challenge the listener's comfort zone. The reference to spanking and physically dominating the partner is not necessarily consensual nor healthy, and could be interpreted as a form of abuse. The vivid imagery of intimacy and adventure is juxtaposed with the singer's perceived flaws, suggesting that the relationship they offer is not perfect but deeply personal and intense. The repetition of the question "What are you waiting for?" adds urgency to the narrative, as if the singer is trying to convince their partner that they are the only one who can fulfill their desires.
Overall, "What Are You" is a complex and provocative song that requires careful analysis to fully understand. It delves into taboo themes of BDSM and power dynamics, pivoting between intimacy and violence, while remaining deeply committed to the idea of giving everything to one's partner.
