I Surrender
Bonnie St. Claire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's so much life I've left to live

And this fire is burning still

When I watch you look at me

I think I could find the will

To stand for every dream

And forsake this solid ground

And give up this fear within

Of what would happen if they ever knew

I'm in love with you

Cause I'd surrender everything

To feel the chance to live again

I reach to you

I know you can feel it too

We'd make it through

A thousand dreams I still believe

I'd make you give them all to me

I'd hold you in my arms and never let go

I surrender

I know I can't survive

Another night away from you

You're the reason I go on

And now I need to live the truth

Right now, there's no better time

From this fear I will break free

And I'll live again with love

No, they can't take that away from me

And they will see, yeah

I'd surrender everything

To feel the chance to live again

I reach to you

I know you can feel it too

We'd make it through

A thousand dreams I still believe

I'd make you give them all to me

I'd hold you in my arms and never let go

I surrender

Every night's getting longer

And this fire is getting stronger, baby

I'll swallow my pride

I'll be alive

Can't you hear my call?

I surrender all

I'd surrender everything

To feel the chance to live again

I reach to you

I know you can feel it too

We'll make it through

A thousand dreams I still believe

I'll make you give them all to me

I'll hold you in my arms and never let go

Right here, right now

I give my life to live again

I'll break free, take me

My everything I surrender all to you

Right now (right now)

I give my life to live again (I give my life)

I'll break free, take me (take me)

My everything,

I surrender

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I Surrender" by Bonnie St.Claire are essentially an admission of love and a request for forgiveness. The first stanza implies that the singer had been holding back their true feelings out of pride and fear of rejection, but now they are humbled and in a state of emotional brokenness. They admit to having played a game of "stay away" with the object of their affection, but now realize the cost of that game is too high. The chorus repeats the title phrase "I surrender, dear" as a plea for forgiveness and a declaration of the singer's willingness to fully commit to the relationship. The final stanza acknowledges that there may have been some hurtful actions or behaviors on both sides, but the singer is willing to put all of that aside in order to fully embrace the love they have for the other person.

Lots of quality records were played at Wigan and I would be pleased to obtain a copy of this tune. I wouldn't single out Wigan; at any soul venue there always tunes some people enjoy and other people are less satisfied with, perhaps that's what makes the scene interesting.
