I say no but I can't complain
With this sex
I don't know but it's all the same
Sexy sexy sexy sexy sexy sexy
Sexy sexy sexy sexy sexy sexy
And you know that I know that you know that I know that you know
Oh, you can do it
Do it to me.
What don't you want with me, I'm a celebrity?
Come into bed with me take my virginity.
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
Press her
Push her
Pressure
Press her
I say yes
You say no but you can't complain
With this sex
I don't know but it's all inane.
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
These cryptic lyrics from Born Ruffians’ “I’m One of Those Girls” explore themes of power dynamics and sexual objectification, particularly from the perspective of a woman who revels in her own objectification. The song starts off with a quote that goes back to the John Lennon and Paul McCartney Beatles days: “you say yes, I say no,” in which the singer sets up an argument or a negotiation, but then they point out that they can’t really complain, given the sexual pleasure that they’re experiencing. They’re in the moment, indulging, with a mix of euphoria and confusion: “I don’t know but it’s all the same,” they sing over and over.
The chorus phrase, “I’m one of those girls,” is repeated a few times throughout the song, as if the person is proudly saying, “I’m one of those girls who likes sex, who likes to be objectified. And that’s who I am, and I don’t feel ashamed of it.” Even when the singer is listed to as a “celebrity,” they’re still offering themselves up for sexual gratification: “Come into bed with me, take my virginity,” the singer sings, purposefully trying to shock and titillate.
The second half of the song takes on a different tenor. The lyrics become more urgent, repeating phrases like “I’m on my own” and “press her, push her, pressure, press her,” in a frenzy. The tone becomes more aggressive, as if the lead singer is demanding power or wanting to seize it back. They’ll say yes, they’ll say no, but ultimately, they’re in control of their own experience.
