It’s strange to you because you’re not part of this group. It’s not cheap to put these uniforms together, plus you have to track down all the right gear, get everything historically accurate so a lot of these people spend their time together and helping each other research what to get, how to build up the uniforms and what weapons to get etc. so it’s a pretty time bonding experience.

As a former Waffen SS LAH Reenactor myself out of Arizona I found it to be a lot of fun but it’s really expensive and that’s why I got out of it. But nobody ever gave me a second look when they saw somebody with dark skin in a SS uniform.

Because it’s not about the ideology, it’s not about that at all.

I don’t really know how to explain it, but it’s fun out there role-playing.

I started out playing airsoft and you had people dressed up as the Taliban, do you think that they’re happy about 911? Do you think they go home and worship Alah, they have a picture of Osama bin Laden hanging above the fireplace? Naw man lol.

I think the problem with your reporting is that you went into this with preconceived notion‘s about who these reenactors were. You probably saw them as individuals in worshiping the Nazis rather than reenactment. But I understand that vice news does lean a little more to the left and anything having to do with history that is not all fuzzy and warm it’s pretty stereotyped. Regardless of the subject matter there’s always a preconceived notion that I think a lot of reporters advice have when covering some controversial issues. But that’s where the context comes in.

I would seriously doubt that these men are out there dressed up as the German Air Force because they want to drop bombs over London.

As a reenactor, who portrays many American-Soviet-German sides it’s a personal attack and major insult on the hobby. The fact he insults the German reenactors but doesn’t even think to critique the Soviet with the monstrosities they committed. It’s all for fun and a hobby we as reenactors enjoy. So I assumed that would include the mustache man's political military forces. However, It would appear that the SS, SturmTruppe, Einsatzgruppen, and volksturm are completely separate organizations.

@Breimic The Wehrmacht and the SS were not the same. The Wehrmacht was the regular german army, the (Waffen-)SS was a paramilitary force which had their own ranks and commanders and generals and training schools the Junkerschulen (Knights Schools).

As someone who's been looking to get into german reenactments, this is incredibly disrespectful to that community, the people who portray the Germans are not even close to being nazis, they're people just like anyone else reenacting the Americans or British that love history, and being offended at someone's love for history or showing people the true sight of what war was like is a fun hobby and a great way to learn. How are you going to teach people about history, especially in this era, if everyone who does german reenactments is labeled as a "Nazi"? Reenactments wouldn't be historical or a hobby, they would just be a political mess.

We had a similar thing happen here in the UK about 15-20 years ago where a TV show called Panorama tried to make out that historical reenactors were all racists and neo-nazis, particularly the ones in WWI+II and viking/saxon societies. The journalist was even trying to goade a guy in an SS uniform into saying something, but the guy turned around and said something along the lines of "I know what you're trying to do, and it's not going to work, my ancestors were Jewish, now go away."

Frankly this guy's attitude towards reenactors is despicable and outright disrespectful, and as a former reenactor myself I found this deeply offensive. We do it out of a love of history and making sure history stays alive and memorable. Because if we allow history to be forgotten we can never learn from it. Also he goes around making all these accussations against the guys in German uniforms, but doesn't bat an eyelid at the woman in a Soviet Red Army uniform, who committed attrocities that rival those of the Germans.

In Bali some temple and houses had swastika, in Japan, they had "Manji" symbol (basically a swastika) in shrines. They have been around for ages before Nazi take that symbol and put it on books and banners. Obviously this reporter don't bother to look up stuff before making some conclusion. Re-enactments are so much fun. I took part in a local US Civil War reenactment once and it was soooo much fun. I was a union soldier in the Battle of Ringgold Gap reenactment and got to use a period correct fully functional replica musket(and wear a cool uniform to boot). Sadly, we haven’t had it again since. Once in a lifetime opportunity.

I know this is an old video, but since these types of topics are becoming more present today in 2022, I want to say as a descendent of Jewish people, some of which have suffered in the war, I love reenactments. I think history is fun and I at one point wanted to participate in a reenactment on the Germans side because of how cool the hobby looks.

It's sad to see that a love of history and war is something that is shunned in this day and age.

What I find more condemning about this, is the fact that those who were being interviewed expressed their love for this hobby in full confidence, just to be called a Nazi by the end of it.

People who do things like that should be fired.

I personally love history of war. It is an important hobby that I have and I find it very interesting to research war and the technological advances that were birthed from conflict. I also listen to old military music that was produced from the early 1910's up to the late 1970ies, especially the german marching songs from the Wehrmacht era of WWII. No I'm not a Nazi, and I don't align my ideals under that political party, but because it interests me to hear such things.

Vice tends to shift from reporter to reporter in terms of quality, a similar video on Americans who re-enact the Vietnam War was done very well, and much of their legitimate news (Not human interest) reporting from active war zones like Iraq and Crimia is very well done.

This video could have been so much better... if only the narrator:
a) knew the difference between historical roll playing and political fanaticism,
b) knew the difference between conscripts and enthusiastic SS Nazis.
c) knew that swastikas (with a certain meaning to Hindu, Buddhist, and Native American communities) do not necessarily mean the same thing as the hakenkreuz (the German version) "in any language", as he stated.
Sure, it's possible there's a handful of reenactors who hold fascistic political views... but overwhelmingly, most are simply history buffs. They want to understand the dynamics of an era, and want to share that learning. If nobody plays the bad guys, you don't have a reenactment.

Just to make clear a significant number of these reenactors are dressed as Fallschirmjägers who as part of Luftwaffe were among the least pro-nazi units in the German army. And deeper into war not even every SS member had to be a nazi. It is one of the worst stereotypes spread by movies etc. after the war.

Reenactors have some of the most utmost respect for History and they portray this interest in going outdoors, meeting up and having fun like this. They have a variety of uniforms to reenact most historical battle with fake weaponry (accurate to the period they're portraying) and a whole lot of fun. You got guys reenacting the US Civil War as well and in some places like Germany, reenactors go as far as to equip Medieval Knights armour just to have some fun.

Bottonline: Reenactors wearing Nazi German uniforms aren't Nazis. Reenactors wearing Confederate uniforms aren't confederate sympathisers. Reenactors wearing Pith helmets and colonial outfits aren't imperialists.

Reenactors are History Buffs who love history, and you should respect them for it.

We WWII Reenactors (atleast me) don’t do most of this for fun although it is, reenactments r meant for honoring history showing how war was. The amount of disrespect u show for this is unbelievable, yeah some of them are 60 year-old fat men who like doing this for fun, but the ones i know and my squad are men who put in the effort to stay in shape, master german, master the way the acted, and put in the effort to learn the marches and phrases. We have more of a hard time studying to master all these details to show history the way it was more then what u interpret as old men going to the woods to fulfill there fantasy. I hope you now understand WWII reenactment isnt abt having fun, but showing how history was and honoring history to see the hardships we all passed through in this cruel world.

There’s a difference between the Waffen SS and the Werchmech. The SS were in the Nazi party, while the main army was just normal enlisted citizens that were not Nazis

This very video is the reason my German group now has to exercise extreme restraint when being asked questions at any reenactment. Anything beyond questions about history all have to be directed to our seniors because of idiots like this who pretend to be interested but really want to slander you into the dirt - when if they'd dig deeper, they'd realize that 50% of our German group has Polish/ Slavic, or Eastern European Jewish heritage. We keep the memory of the bad guys alive so as to prevent it all from happening again.

As a French Napoleonic reenactor I sympathise to a degree with WWII German reenactors.. You cant put on events without them. There are many units, yes there is the SS but also a lot of units like Luftwaffe field division or Regular conscripts who didnt have much choice, and had seen years of propaganda about serving their country. You couldnt refuse or you might be shot or just surrender as your family might suffer. An evil regime still.

One of the reasons the display of these emblems etc are banned isn't necessarily because re-enactment groups have a problem with them, but rather they have a problem with being harassed and potentially cancelled, in what is already a small and niche community.
