boston
Boylife Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is Boston made of dreams?
Oh, what's left of them?
I heard the church ring its bells
I heard you weren't doing well

But in Boston all I see
Is only you, is only you, is only you
I get complacent, I know (but it never meant I don't care)
But you had the patience for me (and gave it all away)

I know I get upset (yeah)
And I know you're getting tired
And I know that I've made mistakes
But you always seem to get me by (get me by)

And once I thought I knew (once I thought I knew)
Turns out I knew nothing at all (at all)
Nothing at all
Nothing at all

So if Boston's made of dreams
Then I'm holding onto things that I shouldn't be
I'll let it go
I'll lay it down

For you

Overall Meaning

The opening line of Boylife's song "Boston" sets the stage for the exploration of the city as a metaphor for the dreams of the singer. He wonders if Boston is made of dreams, and if so, what has become of them in his life. This is followed by a confession that he has heard that the person he is addressing is not doing well. The tone of the singer is contemplative and introspective throughout the song, as he tries to work through his own feelings.

The chorus of the song features the repetition of the line "Is only you," which underscores the central role that this other person plays in the singer's life. He acknowledges his own limitations and tendencies towards complacency, but notes that this other person has always had patience with him. The bridge features a moment of self-awareness, as the singer admits that he once thought he knew everything, but now realizes that he knew nothing at all. The song concludes with the singer resolving to let go of the things he's holding onto that he shouldn't in order to prioritize his relationship with this other person.

The theme of the song is about the struggles and complexities of a relationship, and how the singer must come to terms with his own faults and shortcomings. The song makes use of the city of Boston as a metaphor for the singer's dreams and aspirations. The central theme is well-served by the introspective and contemplative tone of the lyrics, which allow the listener to feel the weight of the emotional burden the singer carries.

makes me sad cause a lot of the people I know will leave for college next year. many will leave and settle in the east coast and it seems like they have their lives figured out already. i don’t know much about my future yet, so it makes me feel left behind. but this song brings me a lot of comfort because we all go our own separate ways someday
