Whispering Pines
Boz Scaggs feat. Lucinda Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you find me in a gloom, or catch me in a dream
Inside my lonely room, there is no in between
Whispering pines, rising of the tide
If only one star shines
That's just enough to get inside
I will wait until it all goes 'round
With you in sight, the lost are found
Foghorn through the night, calling out to sea
Protect my only light, 'cause she once belonged to me
Let the waves rush in, let the seagulls cry
For if I live again, these hopes will never die
I can feel you standing there
But I don't see you anywhere

Standing by the well, wishing for the rains
Reaching for the clouds, for nothing else remains
Drifting in a daze, when evening will be done
Try looking through a haze
At an empty house, in the cold, cold sun

I will wait until it all goes round
With you in sight, the lost are found

Overall Meaning

Boz Scaggs' Whispering Pines featuring Lucinda Williams is a song that talks about a person feeling lost and lonely in their room while navigating through their thoughts and dreams. The person is expressing their desire to connect with someone who understands their struggles and can offer comfort. They believe that even one star shining in the sky is enough to get them through the night. The lyrics use imagery and symbolism to create a dream-like atmosphere, where the whispering pines and rising tide represent the turbulent emotions of the person. The lyrics suggest that the person is waiting for something or someone to make everything right again. They want to find hope and meaning in their life, even if they have to wait for it.

The song continues with the theme of loss and longing as the person talks about the foghorn through the night, calling out to sea, and protecting their only light. The lyrics suggest that the person has lost someone close to them, and they want to hold onto their memory. They believe that if they live again, their hopes will never die, and they can find love and happiness once more. However, they cannot see the person who they believe is standing there, which indicates that their hopes and dreams may not be grounded in reality.

The final stanza of the song portrays the person standing by the well, wishing for the rains and reaching for the clouds, alluding to the fact that they are searching for something that may not exist. The lyrics suggest that the person is in a state of confusion, and they don't know how to find their way. The image of looking through the haze at an empty house in the cold, cold sun further emphasizes the feeling of emptiness and despair. However, the person continues to hope that one day everything will go round with the person they are searching for finally in sight, and they can find their way back to happiness.

Damn! His voice is even better than when I first heard him in the mid 70s! Brilliant, unique stylist. It truly astonishes me that his every song does not have hundreds of millions of plays!😍😍🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

To mature as an artist and allow your music to speak more and more is an amazing feat. No looking back to the good old times, these are the glory days.

@bluebirdreviews

We got this record without listening to any preview tracks and have not been disappointed. Love the Lucinda Williams and Bonnie Raitt duets, but the soul tracks (Al Green, Curtis Mayfield) are very smooth too. Boz can sing anything.

@dbrooks1904

No version can top the original. However, this is a far superior version to Lucinda Williams's at Love for Kevinw.
