Bully
Brainfreeze Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Brainfreeze!
Pull the splinter out slowly
I'll peel the scab off your knee
Let the lake wash it clean
My lies
Settle thicker than my milkshake
But they both make my stomach ache
And they're both slowly weighing me down
Weighing me down
I hear you climbing on the roof
About to break your knee
Calling me to come on up
Cause I can't sleep
And you could never get a ride home
So you'd end up on the front porch
All of us and our unpaid dues
We know we're in for
In the backyard
I hold my breath deep
I drip-dry your nose bleed
Don't want to wake you from your deadly sleep
Inside
You capture memories
Of a four-legged beauty queen
She's the best thing you've ever seen
I hear you climbing on the roof
About to break your knee
Calling me to come on up
Cause I can't sleep
And you could never get a ride home
So you'd end up on the front porch
All of us and our unpaid dues
We know we're in for
I know you're in your room
But I can't look at you
I know you're in your room
But I can't look at you

I can't look at you
I can't look at you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Brainfreeze's song, "Bully," suggest a complex and tumultuous relationship between the singer and the person to whom they are addressing the lyrics. The song begins with the singer offering to help remove a splinter from the other person's body and eventually offers to take care of them as they sleep. The singer then addresses their own lies that seem to have become a burden on them. While the song generally infers a caring relationship, the references to "us and our unpaid dues" suggest some sort of strain or tension.

Throughout the lyrics, there are frequent references to the person climbing onto a roof and eventually calling the singer to come up. This call for help is seemingly insomniac in nature, and could potentially suggest that the person is struggling with their mental health. Despite this, the singer conveys a deep desire to help and support the other person, even if it means ignoring their own exhaustion and weariness. However, the final lines of the song suggest that despite their closeness, there is something about the other person's situation that is simply too difficult for the singer to confront directly.

Overall, the lyrics of "Bully" are poetic and ambivalent while providing insight into a passionate and complicated relationship. The song speaks to themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and empathy while also acknowledging the difficulties caused by unresolved tensions.

I love bands who disregard the fact that the 90s ended years ago.

Bully is better than the grunge I grew up with period.

I was 20 in 1994 when I started to listening alternative bands and since then I love them and now I'm 45
and I'm so happy to see that bands like Wolf Alice and Bully have the potential to be like The Cranberries
or Garbage

It's grunge all the way. I am happy that the sound of the underground is where it is supposed to be: in the underground. Hopefully us rats can crawl back out of the sewers and change the world again.
