Son of Suzanne Cox of the legendary Cox Family, he was surrounded by music and began to hone his craft from a very young age. His talents quickly attracted the music business machine in Nashville, but at the age of 20, he decided to turn down a publishing deal and work on his craft…. he would not take the quick and easy route. In the process of finding great co-writing partners, he befriended Pete Good (producer and co-writer) and AJ Babcock (co-writer) who would go on to become his closest friends outside of the studio. Together, they honed Ratcliff’s musical talent drawing from country, R&B and classic rock to Ratcliff’s personal inspirations such as Stevie Wonder and John Mayer. Eventually, Grammy-award winning producer Shane McAnally teamed up with them, and the result is a bold, fresh look at the seasons of relationships delivered by an artist with a clear point of view and a distinctive sound. 212. Rules of Breaking Up
Brandon Ratcliff Lyrics
Can't go out and not be seen 'cause you gotta give her space, uh huh
Can't go back to being friends, it don't work that way, uh huh
You can't call her up tell her everything you're thinking
Can't show up at her place every time you're drinking
You can't keep hoping that she might be calling by
Whoever wrote the rules of breaking up never kissed your lips
Touched your skin, held the world at their fingertips
Didn't have a clue what heaven was
No they didn't have to lose that kind of love
And if they ever saw that smile, ever felt your fire
They might know what I'm going through
Whoever wrote the rules of breaking up
Ever been broke up, broke up over you
I guess I'm 'sposed to go right out and try to meet somebody new, mm mm
Is she going to be as confident, intelligent and as cool as hell as you? No no, no no
I know he said that in the end it's probably for the best, but I gotta get this off my chest
Whoever wrote the rules of breaking up never kissed your lips
Touched your skin, held the world at their fingertips
Didn't have a clue what heaven was
No they didn't have to lose that kind of love
And if they ever saw that smile, ever felt your fire
They might know what I'm going through
Whoever wrote the rules of breaking up
Ever been broke up, broke up
They say we need time apart, but I can't stop hoping (hoping)
Hoping that rules are just like hearts, and they can be broken
Whoever wrote the rules of breaking up never kissed your lips
Touched your skin, held the world at their fingertips
Didn't have a clue what heaven was
No they didn't have to lose that kind of love
And if they ever saw that smile, ever felt your fire
They might know what I'm going through (know what I'm going through)
Whoever wrote the rules of breaking up
Ever been broke up (broke up), broke up over you
(Broke up, broke up, broke up)
Oh no
They never been broke up (broke up, broke up)
