Gloria
Branigan Laura Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gloria, you're always on the run now
Running after somebody, you gotta get him somehow
I think you've got to slow down before you start to blow it
I think you're headed for a breakdown, so be careful not to show it

You really don't remember, was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria, don't you think you're fallin'?
If everybody wants you, why isn't anybody callin'?
You don't have to answer
Leave them hangin' on the line, oh oh oh, calling Gloria
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria)
I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you've been living under (Gloria)
But you really don't remember, was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?

A ha ha, a ha ha, Gloria, how's it gonna go down?
Will you meet him on the main line, or will you catch him on the rebound?
Will you marry for the money, take a lover in the afternoon?
Feel your innocence slipping away, don't believe it's comin' back soon

And you really don't remember, was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria, don't you think you're fallin'?
If everybody wants you, why isn't anybody callin'?
You don't have to answer
Leave them hangin' on the line, oh-oh-oh, calling Gloria
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria)
I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you've been living under (Gloria)
But you really don't remember, was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?

Overall Meaning

The song "Gloria" by Branigan Laura is a cautionary tale of a woman who is constantly on the run, chasing after someone who seems to be elusive. The lyrics suggest that she may be headed towards a breakdown and the singer advises her to slow down before it's too late. The lyrics are also a call to attention for the woman's friends or family who seem to be concerned about her well-being but have not reached out to her.

The song's chorus, "Gloria, don't you think you're fallin'? If everybody wants you, why isn't anybody callin'?" is a powerful reminder that even though Gloria might be sought after by many, it doesn't necessarily mean that she is emotionally fulfilled or happy. The singer also advises Gloria not to answer anyone's calls but instead hang them on the line - this could be interpreted as the singer maybe telling Gloria to take some time for herself and disconnect from others in order to gain some perspective.

Overall, the song has a powerful message that is as relevant today as it was when it was first released. It serves as a cautionary tale that reminds us of the importance of self-care and taking care of our mental health.

This song always reminds me of my mother. She had a pretty hard life, 2 divorces one from an abusive alcoholic, raised 4 kids, and died at 42 of cancer. But on occasion this song would play on the radio and she'd forget her worries for just a moment and sing it like Laura Brangahan herself. My best memories was when I was in college and we went to 2 weddings within 2 years and we danced to this practically clearing that dance floor. I just remember her wide smile and how happy she was in the moment. After the 2nd wedding, she was gone by the following year, but before she went I played this for her in the hospital and tho she couldn't sing, she flashed that signature smile. This song will forever and always be her song to me.
