In 2009, he released his debut album, A Modern Day Prodigal Son, under independent label Average Joes Entertainment. He followed with Halfway to Heaven in 2010.
In 2011, he signed with Valory Music Co., a division of Big Machine Records, who released a deluxe edition of Halfway to Heaven. The album was produced by Dann Huff. After them, "Kick It in the Sticks" peaked at #34, and "More Than Miles" at #7 on Country Airplay. He won the ACM New Male Artist award in 2013.
Gilbert's second Valory album (third overall), Just as I Am, was released in May 2014. Its lead single, "Bottoms Up," also reached #1. The second single, "Small Town Throwdown," featured guest vocals from labelmates Thomas Rhett and Justin Moore. The third single, "One Hell of an Amen," became Brantley's fourth #1 hit in 2015. The album's fourth single was "Stone Cold Sober," released with the album's platinum edition.
Ahead of his fourth album, The Devil Don't Sleep, Gilbert released the single "The Weekend" as the album's leadoff single. Also included on the album is "The Ones That Like Me."

Take It Outside

They knew how to brawl
I'm talkin' real gunslingers
I'm talkin' real outlaws
They'd saddle up and ride on into town
When it was high noon in them old saloons
You knew what was goin' down
Took it outside
When it was man to man
Toe to toe
You know they had to go
Where nobody's gonna break it up
Not until you've had enough
And if you think you've got the guts
Then let's take it outside
If you think your man enough
You really wanna knuckle up
If you wanna shed a little blood then let's take it outside
Let's take it outside
These days things have changed
There's a lot of talk
Lot of pushin' and shovin'
Well if you wanna walk the walk
Let's have some respect
Got girls in here
Just pay your tab
And lay down your beer Hoss and let's take it outside
Take it outside
It's man to man
Toe to toe
You know we need to go
Where nobody's gonna break it up
Not until we've had enough
And if you think you've got the guts
Then let's take it outside
If you think your man enough
You really wanna knuckle up
If you wanna shed a little blood then let's
Take it outside
Let's take it outside
We're all here for a good time
But don't start no trouble
'Cause it won't be the first time
I put a scar on my knuckles
Now brother I don't mind
I'll be glad to stomp your ass
But if both of us walk out that door
One of us ain't comin' back
Nobody's gonna break it up
Not until we've had enough
And if you think you've got the guts
Then let's take it outside
If you think your man enough
You really wanna knuckle up
If you wanna shed a little blood then let's
Take it outside
Let's take it outside yeah
The lyrics of Brantley Gilbert's Take It Outside speaks about the past and present attitudes towards fights, particularly in bar brawls. The first verse describes the olden days where fights were solved with a good old brawl, comparing it to gunslinger outlaws who’d meet in high noon to settle scores. It highlights the idea of men taking their fight outside, where it’s just man to man, toe to toe, free of interruptions, and no one "breaks it up until you’ve had enough."
In the second verse, Gilbert addresses the changes that have occurred over time, with more talking, pushing, and shoving compared to actual brawls. He then cautions that respect should be shown to the ladies in the bar, and if someone wants to fight and see if they have the strength, it should be taken outside. In the bridge, he warns that starting trouble will lead to a fight where both parties may walk out with injuries or scars.
Overall, the song seems to emphasize the importance of settling things like men and taking a fight outside instead of causing chaos and unnecessary violence in public places. It also has a touch of caution to avoid trouble, and to respect other people, particularly women.

I'm talkin' real outlaws
I'm talking about real criminals who were not afraid to fight
They'd saddle up and ride on into town
They would ride their horses into town
When it was high noon in them old saloons
When it was around midday in old bars
You knew what was goin' down
You could predict what was going to happen
They took it outside
They settled their disputes outside the bar
When it was man to man
When it was one person against another person
Toe to toe
When they were standing close to each other and ready to fight
You know they had to go
You know they had to fight
Where nobody's gonna break it up
Where nobody would interfere in the fight
Not until you've had enough
Not until you were done fighting
And if you think you've got the guts
If you think you are brave enough
Then let's take it outside

Well if you wanna walk the walk
If you are really serious about fighting
Let's have some respect
Let's behave admirably during the fight
Got girls in here
There are women in the bar
Just pay your tab
Just pay for what you drank
And lay down your beer Hoss and let's take it outside
Finish your drink and let's fight outside
We're all here for a good time
We're all here to have fun
But don't start no trouble
But don't try to start a fight
'Cause it won't be the first time
Because I have experienced it before
I put a scar on my knuckles
I have the scars on my hand from previous fights
Now brother I don't mind
I don't care if we fight
I'll be glad to stomp your ass
I'll be happy to beat you up
But if both of us walk out that door
But if both of us leave the bar
One of us ain't comin' back
One of us may not survive the fight
Let's take it outside
Let's fight outside the bar
Let's take it outside yeah
Let's fight outside the bar

Generally fighting is not the answer any more because no one actually fights. A dude swings a haymaker and all his buddies pounce on the other dude, or it turns into a bunch of pansies slappin each other around until one pulls a gun. This is about real fights, man to man, toe to toe.
