Stairway to Heaven
Brave Combo/Tiny Tim Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for
[Chorus]
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And you know sometimes words have two meanings
In the tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
[Chorus]
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
[Chorus]
And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter
And it makes me wonder
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the may queen
Yes there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
Your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can't you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
[Chorus]
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for
[Chorus]
The lyrics to Stairway to Heaven, performed by Brave Combo and Tiny Tim, depict a woman who is seeking to attain heaven by buying a stairway. The woman believes that all that glitters is gold, a metaphor for her perception of the materialistic world. She believes that with a word, she can get anything she desires. The chorus repeats the line "And she's buying a stairway to heaven," emphasizing her desire for something greater than material possessions.
In the second verse, the woman is uncertain about the meaning of a sign on the wall, reflecting the idea that sometimes words have two meanings. She hears the songbird singing in the tree by the brook, but sometimes our thoughts can be misguided. In the third verse, the person is contemplating the feeling they get when they look to the west. Their spirit is crying for leaving, and in their thoughts, they have seen rings of smoke through the trees. They hear the voices of those who stand looking in the forest. The fourth verse suggests that if they all call the tune, the piper will lead them to reason, and a new day will dawn for those who stand long, and the forest will echo with laughter.
The final verse describes a woman who shines white light and wants to show how everything still turns to gold, symbolizing her desire to help others. The lyrics indicate that there are two paths one can choose in life, and in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on. The piper is calling the listener to join him, and the lady can hear the whispering wind, symbolizing a call to a spiritual journey.

I love this record and am disappointed that it isn't on Spotify. The cover of Hey Jude is similarly great. I have such a profound memory of the first time I saw Brave Combo as a kid--a self-described "Nuclear Polka" band from Denton, playing on the great lawn of the local university. My mind was blown and I don't think I have ever danced so hard in my life. When I heard that they were doing a record with the eccentric Tiny Tim, I could hardly wait.

He was so much better by this point, in his 70s, than when he first hit, in hiis 40s. He learned how to sing, but also how to be a showman while staying true to music.
Bravo, and RIP, Herbert!
