Old Folks
Brazzaville Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A cup of tea with powdered cream
Or comet dust and subway steam
Or 3 kilos of mangosteen
Ayaaah ayaaah mangosteen
An airport lounge in Amsterdam
A summer rainfall in Japan
With you I'm such a happy man
Ayaaah Ayaaah, a happy man
I hope one day I'm old with you
We're holding hands like old folks do
With knobby knees and funny shoes
Yeah, that's the future I would choose
Ayaaah Ayaaah I would choose
The lyrics of Brazzaville's song "Old Folks" depict a beautiful future where the singer hopes to grow old with someone he loves so dearly. In the first verse, the singer uses similes to describe the distance between him and his love, highlighting how distant and surreal they seem to be. He compares their love to a cup of tea with powdered cream, a comet's dust, subway steam, and three kilos of mangosteen. The word "ayaaah" is repeated throughout this verse, giving the song a dreamy and contemplative feel.
In the second verse, the singer goes on to describe different experiences and elements that remind him of his love. He mentions an airport lounge in Amsterdam, a summer rainfall in Japan, his lover's cowboy hat, and lovely tan. The singer expresses his happiness and gratitude for his love, portraying himself as a joyful man just by being with his lover.
The chorus of the song is perhaps the most significant part of the lyrics. The singer hopes to grow old with his love and be like old folks, old and wrinkly yet still full of love and holding hands together. He further adds humorous elements to the image of growing old, mentioning knobby knees and funny shoes. Nevertheless, the singer stresses the importance of the love they share, and the future he dreams of is one where they are still together, holding hands just like old folks.
