Lazy Afternoon
Bree Sharp Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The handbag hounds are out again
I can hear the "oohs" and "ahs"
Rising from the sidewalk sale
From the girls in Vogue and the Hip-hop chil
It's OK to trap and kill
In the name of fashion
And the papers say the end is soon
And the kids are deep in a TV haze
And the Middle East is going crazy
But what can we do? Lazy afternoon
Take a walk on Sunset
It's a party you won't soon forget
I can smell new age coffee
Rising from the strip mail chain
Cause we need fast food at every turn
It's OK to slash and burn
In the name of hunger
It's a lazy afternoon
And the papers say the end is soon
And the corporations overgraze
So the Little Guy can't get a raise
Hey, but what can we do? Lazy afternoon
It's a big commercial grin
It wears me down till I have to give in
There's a barcode where my heart should be
Oh, TV, tell me what I need
I don't care how it get to the store
Just gimme more, more
It's a lazy afternoon
And the papers say how to move out to the moon
Cause the Earth's going down in a toxic haze
And our Money goes but the Problem stays
Hey, so what can we do? Lazy afternoon
Hey, so what can we do? What can we do?
Lazy afternoon
The song “Lazy Afternoon” by Bree Sharp is a commentary on the modern society that is driven by consumerism and greed. The artist mentions two popular streets in America- Madison Avenue and Sunset Boulevard, which are symbols of the American capitalist system. The first verse talks about the fashion industry and the “handbag hounds” who are out shopping. The girls in Vogue and the Hip-hop chill represent the younger generation that is ready to kill for fashion. The power of advertisements in portraying an ideal lifestyle and consumer culture metaphorically leads to the death of morality. This is a sharp criticism of the American way of life, that it is alright to do anything and everything as long as you fit in with the fashionable crowd.
The chorus ‘lazy afternoon,’ repeated several times is an ironic reference to the apathy of the modern world, including the younger generation who are distracted by television and new age coffee. The papers inform of the latest global catastrophes, the Middle East is ‘going crazy’ but the sensation of impending doom does not lead to social change. Despite corporations overgrazing and exploiting their employees, the little guy isn’t getting a raise either, but most people don’t complain or do anything about it. The verse ends with the rhetorical question, “What can we do?” This can be seen as a challenge to the listeners and society as a whole.
The final verse is the most powerful, as the artist brings in the symbol of the barcode representing a person’s heart. This implies that people’s hearts are no longer human or emotional. Instead, they are digitized and void of any emotion or feeling. The TV is personified and is asking the artist what she needs. The final line refers to the commercialization of the environment being destroyed in the name of profit. The song ends with the same challenging question, “what can we do?” and the title “Lazy afternoon” takes on new meaning as a metaphor for the indolence of the society that is unwilling to exercise its collective power to effect change.
