Overall Meaning

In Breslau's song No Control, the singer emphasis on the notion of losing control over oneself. There was a second atempt to make Festung Warschau in the ruins .
The German comander disobeyed Hitlers order and pulled out troops
from the sea of ruins . Russians entered and took empty , destroyed
town practically without the fight or casualties .
Even the communists use to say that Warsaw was taken .

Breslau, aside from providing inspiration for Germans facing the invading Soviet armies to resist, proved one of the better engagements of the faltering Wehrmacht in 1945. Six understrength "Fortress" divisions, made up of second-rate troops, held off an equivalent number of Soviet ARMIES that fought for ten weeks to reduce the city, along with the ragtag assortment of Luftwaffe and other non-Heer military personnel, as well as "Volksturmn. Several sources cited 46K to 50K as the nominal German troop strength, although after whittling out those men patently not fit for front-line duty, not that it mattered, the actual strength was about 20K.

From what I've read of that battle, the Soviets were devoting more of their efforts to pursue the Lower Silesian Offensive, as Stalin had indicated the industries of Silesia as "gold" to his officers, prioritizing their capture over mounting a direct assault on Berlin (which had been rapidly reinforced by stripping the Western front bare of reserves), rather than take Breslau itself, though capture of that vital junction would have proved useful. They didn't anticipate how tough a nut it'd be to crack, and went ahead with the Upper Silesian Offensive, which was frustrated and ultimately unsuccessful; most of the vital factories, the last that the Germans had for producing war material, worked right up to V-E day. It was once there'd been objectives taken elsewhere that resources, including artillery shells, could be freed to blast Breslau to smithereens, which it WAS.

Karl Hanke, like so many senior SS-officers, was a brutal, unforgiving man that cared little for either those his men fought (or oppressed), or the men themselves, even Waffen-SS men. The senior Heer officer in charge of the forces defending Breslau, Von Neihoff, was warned by the man he'd relieved, General Von Ahlfen, that it was more likely he'd get a GERMAN bullet in his skull than a Soviet one, so he should at least make sure it was his OWN! I believe that Duffy, in "Red Storm on the Reich", mentions that Von Neihoff told Von Ahlfen, "Hanke is 'bloody-minded' towards you."

Certainly if the Czechs had known who they had as a prisoner, they'd either have turned him over to the Soviets or the Poles, or conducted their own "trial" and executed him anyway. AFAIK, although nominally Hanke was Reichsfuhrer-SS, and could, had he survived, been placed in the docket at Nuremburg, the Allied investigators at SHAEF, attempting to round up suspected Nazi war criminals, weren't aware of his whereabouts.

Mark, you'd know, since Hanke didn't receive word of his "promotion" until the day before "Festung" Breslau was surrendered, and he used that news as a pretext to bug out of the doomed city, having sacrificed men and boys to build the airstrip his reserved (and protected) Storch aircraft used for its final flight, even though quite a few of them were hit by Soviet artillery fire in the process...had that "promotion" been announced publicly? It'd been almost two weeks since Hitler learned of the betrayal of "Truer Heinrich", and five days since Hitler had shot himself, so I wonder if his status as Reichsfuhrer-SS, not that there was much of a "Reich" or an "SS" to be in command of, was publicly known. Given that even partisans, hell-bent on revenge, would nevertheless want to take a notorious German official alive to display as a trophy, I'd say they simply didn't know, nor did any senior Soviet officers.
