Clowns
Brett Anderson Lyrics

Hate where there was lust
The trip like honey
But lust don't mean a thing
When all we do is shout and scream
It's almost funny
We're like clowns
Tumbled into town now
It's such a lonely sound
Mouths that once exchanged
Kisses in the rain
Are full of pain now
It all seems so absurd
When every sentence and every word
Is so painful
Clowns
Tumbled into town now
Love is on its way down now
Such a lonely sound
Clowns
Faces with painted frowns now
Sat on a merry-go-round now
Such a lonely sound
Such a lonely sound
Such a lonely sound
Such a lonely sound
Such a lonely sound
Such a lonely sound
Such a lonely sound
Brett Anderson's song Clowns is a poignant reflection on love and relationships. The opening lines of the song, "Take a look at us, hate where there was lust," imply a relationship that has hit a breaking point. Despite the strong initial attraction and passion ("The trip like honey"), their love has deteriorated into shouting and screaming, making their relationship feel like a circus act. It's almost as if their love has become a performance for an audience, represented by the painted faces of clowns.
The chorus repeats twice, emphasizing the isolation and loneliness of the broken relationship. The kissing in the rain has turned into pain and every word is now so painful. The clowns are "tumbled into town now" and "love is on its way down now," suggesting that their love has completely fallen apart. The painted frowns on the clowns' faces reflect the sorrow and regret that both partners feel.
The song ends with a repetition of "such a lonely sound," further emphasizing the despair and loneliness of the situation. It's almost as if their love has become a performance for an audience, and despite the attention of others, they are ultimately alone in their pain.

Podívejte se na nás
Nesnáším tam, kde byl chtíč
Cesta jako med
Ale touha neznamenají vůbec nic
Při všem, co děláme, je křik a křik
Je to skoro k smíchu
Jsme jako klauni
Spadl do města nyní
Láska je na cestě teď dole
Je to takový osamělý zvuk
Ústa, že jednou vyměnily
Polibky v dešti
Jsou plné bolesti nyní
To vše se zdá být tak absurdní
Když každá věta a každé slovo
Je tak bolestivé
Klauni
Spadl do města nyní
Láska je na cestě teď dole
Takový osamělý zvuk
