Grateful
Brian Stokes Mitchell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(John Bucchino)

I've got a roof over my head
I've got a warm place to sleep
Some nights I lie awake counting gifts
Instead of counting sheep

I've got a heart that can hold love
I've got a mind that can think
There may be times when I lose the light
And let my spirits sink
But I can't stay depressed
When I remember how I'm blessed

Grateful, grateful
Truly grateful I am
Grateful, grateful
Truly blessed And duly grateful

In a city of strangers
I got a family of friends
No matter what rocks and brambles fill the way
I know that they will stay until the end

I feel a hand holding my hand
It's not a hand you can see
But on the road to the promised land
This hand will shepherd me
Through delight and despair
Holding tight and always there

Grateful, grateful
Truly grateful I am
Grateful, grateful
Truly blessed And duly grateful

It's not that I don't want a lot
Or hope for more, or dream of more
But giving thanks for what I've got
Makes me happier than keeping score

In a world that can bring pain
I will still take each chance
For I believe that whatever the terrain
Our feet can learn to dance
Whatever stone life may sling
We can moan or we can sing

Grateful, grateful
Truly grateful I am
Grateful, grateful

Truly blessed And duly grateful
Truly blessed And duly grateful

Brian - soulful, incomparable voice and musicality. John's immortal song, Grateful --- it should be Thanksgiving Day's theme song all over the world. What a marvelous combination: Brian and John Buccino's moving masterpiece of a song. We're so grateful for this combination, a gift that doesn't stop giving!

I listened to this song every day for many days of cancer treatment. That was four years ago and I'm still listening to it.

This has been a song that for years makes me give thanks for the things that truly mean the most. A song which forces me to readjust my priorities, keep my head to the sky, take a deep breath and think about those less fortunate than myself. Job well done Brian and TYVM for the post saintjaques101 ... this musical offering deserves a standing ovation !!!

Once again this year, David Kenney of WBAI followed his tradition of playing several versions of this profound John Bucchino composition on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  And will continue to play one each week until the New Year.  I cannot thank Mr. Kenney enough for introducing me to this remarkable song. Likewise to Mr. Bucchino who so beautifully wrote this piece from his own heart. So many wonderful artists have recorded it. Mr. Mitchell's voice again does the song justice here.

My heart sings this song daily! When I first heard it on the radio via internet, I ran to my computer to find out who was singing it but it ended before I got there. I googled and found your YouTube post. I am GRATEFUL you included the lyrics. I have shared it with family and just today on facebook. I am truly, duly grateful for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...and for the joy of love and the thrill of survival! TBTG (Thanks Be To God!) And, THANK YOU, again, for sharing!
