The Kid
Bro. Danielson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Kids are pushing kids
On down
Till they all hit ground
Parents, pick your brats up
At the lost and found
On the, on the goodness of men
My nice guy routine is wearing thin
I received a beating at the foreign meeting
I lied but you stayed
And when I'm gettin' home
Oh, I was so afraid
Things are gonna change, let's go home
Bullets they flew by
And grazed my brothers mind
Please, please, everyone
I just want to be liked
Good deeds smellin' up
This room I must clean up
But I just don't know how
My mother's not around right now
Mom, mom, mom, mom, mom, mom
I've been childish and all mean to the fools
Myself as acting as Daniel the Cruel
I've taken attendance at finishing schools
Filled with like children who go beyond rules
They're wise as the serpents and gentle as doves
Skipping around, and so rooted in love
Kindness to strangers, behind closing doors
Let us all become yours
We're not so proud of our test scores
We're wasted alone, but you stay
And holding our hands do say
If you are in need
Oh, then here I am
I got such good friends, such great family
Their patience never ends, the pain that I can be
I hardly need to tell them what great notes to play
They got treats and tricks, that dwarf mine anyway
Papa, says let the children come
Come to me, so you can see
How blessed are we
This child is seeking to be pleasing
To his papa and to his pride
Has peace on his side
Has peace
Sure they are cute, but what monsters I swear
If they're so smart why'd they step on my hair
They all seemed nice but they just robbed me twice
They all seemed cute, stepping on all the trumpets
Monsters of niceness backstabbing our targets
With these bruised melons I boycott the markets
Highly regard to complete unimpressed
I put myself down so your chances have past
This people stew is too spicy to last
As a hen gathers and beneath her wings
Protects her children, so papa does bring
Life to us kids but it, oh, so, so seems
We won't let him now
We won't let him
I've been childish and all mean to the fools
Myself as acting as Daniel the Cruel
I've taken attendance at finishing schools
Filled with children who go beyond the rules
They're wise as the serpents and gentle as doves
Skipping around, and all rooted in love
Kindness to strangers, behind closing doors
Let us all become yours
We're not so proud of our test scores
We're wasted alone, but you stay
And holding our hands do say
This is the brothers, we are
This is the sisters, we are
We the daughters, we see
We the sons are to be
In the song "The Kid" by Bro. Danielson, the lyrics contemplate the harsh realities of life and human behavior. The first few lines reflect the violence that exists among kids, with kids pushing kids down until they hit the ground. The tone of the song is introspective, with the lyrics urging parents to pick their kids up at the lost and found. However, the singer has not given up on the goodness of men and continues to strive to be a better person. The singer speaks of receiving a beating at a foreign meeting and lying, yet someone still stayed. The singer is afraid but wants to change and go home.
The song speaks of the pain inflicted by others while trying to seek acceptance and the notion that good deeds will someday overcome the bad. The singer feels trapped by their childish behavior, speaking of "acting as Daniel the Cruel" and attending finishing schools filled with children who go beyond the rules. The song's closing lines focus on unity and becoming a collective "we," with the brothers, sisters, daughters, and sons all part of the same journey.

Oh no!
Did I step on your trumpet
Or did I lump
Lump them in with you?
(Did he step on your trumpet
Or did he lump?)
I put your name on the ballot
'Cause you should run
Though you don't want to
(He put your name on the ballot
Thought you should run)
I been called the wet blanket
By cranks who I outrank
With no thanks
Who do not have a clue
Yes, I know how to be quiet
Just one more thing
I made you something
(He thinks he knows how to be quiet
Made you something)
I wrote for you a lovely sonnet
'Bout two great friends
Yours truly and you
We'll grant just one social skill
Share a gesture of good will
How
I try
To relate
With
My shipmates
Then I just start blurting out the first thing my mind
How'm I looking in your frilly bonnet
With a diamond on it?
I guess I better go
(How's he looking in your frilly bonnet
With a diamond on it?)
I'm a people magnet
When I wear your jacket
Good luck getting this
Pleasing people
Is so predictable
We love you now
Then stab you how many
Times I obsess
And am making a mess
Failing to impress you
In all that I can't do
Would you take care of my pet parrot
And feed him, please?
He speaks less than me
(Would you take care of his pet parrot
And kill him, please?)
You speak so much about my casket
My body basket
Did I do something wrong?
(You speak so much about his casket
His body basket)
We'll grant one more social clue
The landfill shall be home to you
All my ships
Sailing relations
Have finally found
Who I am made out be
Me and free
Of
Pleasing people
Is so predictable
We love you now
Then stab you how many
Times I obsess
And am making a mess
Failing to impress you
In all that I can't
Be just who you're made to be
Papa is so mighty please with thee

My friend gave me the Ships cd back in like 06 and I wasn't ready. I remember being completely put off by it back then. THIS WHOLE CD IS A FREAKING SLAPPER! I get that now.

Seeing them live in a tiny venue above an Irish bar was a real highlight of my 2000s concert going years.
@lasercatsproductions
I've listened to this song off and on practically my whole life (my dad's a huge fan) but I've never seen the music video before. Wow. Just wow. It gives the song a whole "literal" feel to it and it shouldn't work but it absolutely does! Love the Danielson foil for life!
@sdweim85
I remember sitting on the couch with my friend flipping through channels until for some weird reason we stopped on PBS. This was playing it was just so strange, and oddly addicting. Great song
@patrickhair2808
Did not know PBS ran this. Wonder how that came to be. But cool anyway.
