Broadcast Lyrics

Under the white chalk
Drawn on the black board
Drawn on the black board
Under the x-ray
I'm jut a vertebrate

Do that to me
Do that to my anatomy
Do that to me
Do that to my anatomy
Corporeal Corporeal

We are mankind
We are manikin
With and without mind
With or without Darwin

Classify me
The strings of my autonomy
Classify me
The strings of my autonomy
Corporeal corporeal

A thorny red heart
Around a thin arm
Inside a white bone
The love is inborn

Close up to me
Up close to my anatomy
Close up to me
Up close to my autonomy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Broadcast's song Corporeal speak to the physical nature of human existence and the ways in which we are both defined and constrained by our bodies. The opening lines "Under the white chalk / Drawn on the black board / Drawn on the black board / Under the x-ray" create a sense of clinical detachment, highlighting the ways in which our bodies can be reduced to mere objects of study. The subsequent line, "I'm just a vertebrate," reinforces this sense of objectification, reducing the singer to nothing more than a biological organism.

However, as the song progresses, there is a shifting tone that suggests a deeper connection between the physical body and the self. Lines such as "Close up to me / Up close to my anatomy" and "The strings of my autonomy" suggest a merging of the physical and the personal. The word "autonomy" implies agency, but it is connected to the physical body through the metaphor of strings, suggesting that our bodies are integral to our sense of self-determination.

The chorus repetition of "Corporeal corporeal" reinforces the centrality of the physical body to the human experience, but the use of the word "corporeal" also suggests a sense of transcendence beyond this physical plane. It is a reminder that while we are indeed limited by our physical bodies, there is also a spiritual or emotional aspect to our existence that cannot be fully contained by the physical.

oh my god, my new favorite song; late to the party is better than never getting there, I guess.. I am so sorry to hear she is gone.

Good one.

She shouldn't have died like this. I'm going to miss not seeing her career blossom. I can only hope that more people discover her music now and appreciate it, with younger listeners realizing that female vocalists can be talented and unique without having to resort to cliche' entertainment crap. She was rare and even though she's gone, her music will live on.

@PorkchopCupcake

@Eagle While traveling or touring, she developed some respiratory problems that either went untreated or mistreated and that turned into Pneumonia, which I believe is the officially reported cause of death. Maybe there were some underlying medical problems that exacerbated it.

At JPHBF, Attentiveness to this conversation can be credited to a mind under the influence of nostalgia, which often times does lead to mourning.
Yet, we can still be released from this emotional inertia and dissolve into the psychedelia that is Broadcast.
