Under the Water
Brother Brown Lyrics

It's been like that for a while
Everything seems strange to me
I feel like a newborn child
[Chorus]
And I know I don't belong down here
I guess it'd always be the same
Under the water 2x
Uuu you left me drowning [2x]
I try to grow a mermaid's tail
'Cause here's a lot of danger
The great big sharks with long sharp teeth
Would love to catch a stranger
[Chorus]
Can't you see? 2x
That I was left to drown 2x
Can't you see? 2x
That I was deep down under
Can't you see? 2x
That I am deep deep deep down under
That I was left to drown, left to drown, left to drown, oh
Can't you see? 4x
That I was left to drown, left to drown, left to drown,
Can't you see? 3x
(left to drown)
oh
Can't you see? 2x
That I am deep down under
I am deep deep deep down under
Can't you see? 2x
The lyrics of Brother Brown's song "Under The Water" is about feeling out of place and suffocated in one's current situation. The opening lines "I can't breathe here anymore" indicate that the persona is feeling trapped and uncomfortable where they are. This feeling has been ongoing for a while, as the lyrics state "It's been like that for a while." The persona's discomfort is further emphasized by the line "Everything seems strange to me, I feel like a newborn child." This line indicates that the situation is so unfamiliar and uncomfortable that the persona feels like they are starting from scratch.
The chorus of the song is poignant, as it emphasizes the persona's hopelessness in the situation. The line "And I know I don't belong down here, I guess it'd always be the same" indicates that the persona feels like they are out of place and that their situation is never going to improve. The next line "I wish I wouldn't have to fear" is a plea for relief from the situation. The phrase "under the water" which is repeated throughout the chorus has a metaphorical meaning of being submerged in a situation that is suffocating and uncomfortable.
In the second verse, the persona tries to adapt to the situation by wishing to "grow a mermaid's tail" so they can survive the dangers of being "deep down under" which is a metaphorical reference to being in the midst of a difficult situation. However, the persona faces the realization that there is no escaping the danger as "The great big sharks with long sharp teeth would love to catch a stranger."
