Pua Lane
Brother Noland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Bye, bye, bye Pua Lane,
oh, I hope I never see your face,
your eyes are too deceiving for me,
I said, bye, bye Pua Lane.
So, so long, Pua Lane,
you know, many-a-memory I've had of you,
but your eyes, they make me blue,
I said so long, Pua Lane!

Bye, bye, bye Pua Lane,
yes, tears always fall from my eyes
when we think of the way that we lived,
I said, bye, bye Pua Lane.
So, so long, Pua Lane,
oh dear God, I hope that all my friends don't know,
don't you shatter their dreams,
now don't you shatter them, Pua Lane.

So, so long, Pua Lane,
oh dear God, I hope that all my friends don't know,
don't you shatter their dreams,
now don't you shatter them, Pua Lane.

Au revoir, Pua Lane,
I mean, you know, that--that you never ever seem to change,
if everyone could see you, I'm sure they'd say,
they'd say, "Bye, bye Pua Lane!"
Au revoir, Pua Lane,
oh, yeah, you never, never seem to change,
if everyone could see you, I'm sure they'd say,
they'd say, "Bye, bye Pua Lane!"

Aloha oi, Pua Lane,
oh, I'm really gonna' miss your face,
your eyes are too deceiving for me,
I said, Bye, bye Pua Lane.
Aloha oi, Pua Lane,
oh, I'm really gonna' miss your face,

your eyes are too deceiving for me,
I said, Bye, bye Pua Lane.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Brother Noland's song, Pua Lane, depict a farewell to an unreliable and deceptive person. The singer bids goodbye to Pua Lane, hoping to never see her face again, as her eyes are too deceiving for him. He has many memories of her, but they only make him feel blue. The refrain "bye, bye, bye Pua Lane" and "so, so long Pua Lane" indicate a strong desire to be done with her and move on from her negative influence.

As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the singer is not the only one who has been affected negatively by Pua Lane. He expresses concern about her potentially shattering the dreams of their mutual friends, hoping that they don't find out about her true nature. The song's final refrain, "aloha oi Pua Lane," suggests that the singer is saying goodbye forever and will not miss her deceptive ways.

Many generations including me grew up on that beloved lane. It’s always been a secret little haven no matter what people say. Palama settlement, kaumakapili church, tamashiro market (my little aquarium)...

Mahalo for posting! One of my favorite among favorite songs by Brother Noland (and the Island Bad Boys) circa 1990's and beyond. I was listening to something else here on YouTube and it led into this clip- great audio (and love the photos at the end). This is a magic feel, almost Pink-Floydish with all sorts of jazz and island influence - but pure Brother Noland and his Hawai'ian style! Aloha!
