Look Out Any Window
Bruce Hornsby & the Range Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a man workin' in a field
See's the rain and it's burning
He's saying this can't be real
As he sees the color of the fields turning
Far away the men too busy getting rich to care
Close their eyes and let it all out into the air
Hoping nobody else would care
Look out any window
Look out any open door
Look out any window
See what's going on in the world around you

There's a man working on a boat
Pulling lines from the water
Just trying to stay afloat
Filling the nets is getting harder
Far away they bend the rules so secretly
Close their eyes and let it all out into the sea
Hoping nobody else would see

Look out any window
Look out any open door
Look out any window
See what's going on in the air around you

Far away too many leaders let them get their way
Close their eyes and let it all out into the bay
Say they'll clear it up another day

Look out any window
Look out any open door
Look out any window
See what's going on in the air around you

Look out, look out for the big boys
Telling you everything they're gonna do
Look out, look out for the fat cat builder man
Turning this into a wasteland
Look out, look out for the back room boys
That say the smoke is gonna blow away

Look out, look out for the men who say it's okay\
Sitting in a building far away

Overall Meaning

The song Look Out Any Window by Bruce Hornsby & the Range speaks about the modern world's exploitation of natural resources and the environment. The lyrics paint the picture of the struggles of two men as they go about their daily lives - one working in a field and the other on a boat. The man in the field sees the rain falling acidic and burning, and he cannot believe that it is real. He watches as the beautiful color of the fields he once knew fades away. However, the men far away, who are too busy getting rich to care, turn a blind eye to the environment's destruction and ignore how their actions have an impact.

The second man is fishing on a boat and trying to make ends meet. However, filling his nets is getting harder by the day, and he struggles to stay afloat. Meanwhile, the leaders bending the rules and the fat cat builder man destroy the environment, hiding it secretly from their eyes, hoping nobody would see. The song is calling for people to be aware of such happenings and to take proactive measures to stop it. The chorus urges listeners to Look Out Any Window, Look out any open door and see what's going on in the world around you, what's happening in the air around you.

Overall, the song is a call to action, urging people to be more mindful of the world around them and to take responsibility for the environment. It implores people to take care of nature and to be more vocal about the exploitation for cheap gains.

This guy was the most under-appreciated singer of our time! Never highly recognized in the manner that he should've been. Great tunes Bruce...thanks!

@sroevukasroevuka

Except for us fans. Saw him live in Chicago. Great show.

@maureenodonnell82

Absolutely agree!

@venkatkrishnan8146

So true. I felt that many times. Deserves much more than what has been done now. Great tunes and a wonderful singer. One of my favourites.

@tarataris7446

Bruce was vastly underrated. Hell of a songwriter. Hell of a piano player. I learned to play piano because of him. Easily in the top three of my all time favorite musicians . This is good wholesome music. Im 45 and I feel bad for the younger generation not to hear this beautiful music and not to experience it first hand as we did. This is real music!!!!

@paulsmith9192
