Rain
Bruce Ruffin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen to the pouring rain, listen to it pour
And with ev'ry drop of rain, you know, I love you more
Let it rain all night long
Let my love for you grow strong
As long as we're together
Who cares about the weather

Listen to the falling rain, listen to it fall
And with ev'ry drop of rain, I can hear you call
Call my name right out loud
I can hear above the clouds
And I'm here among the puddles
You and I together huddle
Listen to the falling rain, listen to it rain

It's raining, it's pouring
The old man is snorin'
He went to bed, he bumped his head
He couldn't get up in the mornin'

Listen to the falling rain, listen to it fall
And with ev'ry drop of rain, I can hear you call
Call my name right out loud
I can hear above the clouds
And I'm here among the puddles
You and I together huddle
Listen to the falling rain, listen to it rain

Listen to the falling rain, listen to the rain
Listen to the falling rain, listen to the rain ...

Overall Meaning

"Rain" by Bruce Ruffin is a classic love song that describes a couple's love growing stronger as they listen to the pouring rain. The opening lines of the song encourage the listener to pay attention to the sound of the rain falling, suggesting that it represents the growing passion of the singer for his beloved. Every drop of rain represents his love growing stronger and more passionate. The chorus of the song emphasizes the idea that rain is not a hindrance to their love but instead helps it grow stronger, and that as long as they’re together, they can weather any storm.

The second verse emphasizes the idea of the couple being together even in the midst of the rain. The rain serves as a backdrop to their love as they huddle together and listen to the rain call out. The third verse, which has no direct connection to the rest of the lyrics, appears to be a playful adaptation of an old nursery rhyme. Although it could be seen as random, it also illustrates how the rain can affect the world around the singer, perhaps indicating that he believes the rain brings people together in various ways.

Overall, the lyrics of "Rain" evokes a sense of passion and devotion even in the midst of challenging circumstances like the rain. The song celebrates love that can withstand any weather, and its simple yet timeless lyrics make it memorable for generations.

Bruce used to live in our neighbourhood in London in the 70s; as a teen I was thrilled when he drove by in his pink Rolls Royce and long leather coat, and hollered 'Hi' to us. A very nice guy.
