Girls in Their Summer Clothes
Bruce Springsteen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well the street lights shine
Down on Blessing Avenue
Lovers they walk by
Holdin' hands two by two

A breeze crosses the porch
Bicycle spokes spin 'round
Jacket's on, I'm out the door
Tonight I'm gonna burn this town down

And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by

Kid's rubber ball smacks
Off the gutter 'neath the lamp light
Big bank clock chimes
Off go the sleepy front porch lights

Downtown the store's alive
As the evening's underway
Things been a little tight
But I know they're gonna turn my way

And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by

Frankie's Diner's
Over on the edge of town
Neon sign spinnin' round
Like a cross over the lost and found

Fluorescent lights
Flicker above Bob's Grill
Shaniqua brings a coffee and asks "fill?"
And says "penny for your thoughts now my boy Bill"

She went away
She cut me like a knife
Hello beautiful thing
Maybe you could save my life

In just a glance
Down here on Magic Street
Love's a fool's dance
I ain't got much sense but I still got my feet

And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by

And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by

La la la la, la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la

La la la la, la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la

Overall Meaning

The song "Girls in Their Summer Clothes" by Bruce Springsteen is a nostalgic song, capturing the mood and feelings of a summer evening in a small town. The lyrics describe the scene of the street on a summer night as lovers walk by holding hands, a breeze blows across the porch, and kids play with their rubber ball. The singer gets dressed in his jacket and goes out to the town, intending to enjoy it to the fullest. He notices the girls in their summer clothes passing him by in the cool of the evening light, giving him a feeling of love and hope.

The singer goes downtown, and the entire street is alive as the evening has just started. He feels a little tight as things haven’t been going well for him, but he believes they will turn around. A neon sign of Frankie's Diner is spinnin' round like a cross over the lost and found. He goes to Bob's Grill, where Shaniqua greets him, offering him coffee and asks for his thoughts. Suddenly, he sees a beautiful girl, and his life changes. Love's a fool's dance, but he still has his feet, and that is what matters. The song ends with the chorus, as the girls in their summer clothes continue to pass by the singer.

Overall, the song is a great reflection of nostalgia, love, and hope. It evokes a sense of longing and memories of the past while also giving hope and the chance for love and happiness in the future.

Uma das coisas que gosto dele é a quantidade e variedade musical que ele apresentou em diferentes momentos da carreira.

I've loved this song since I first heard it in 2008, but this is the first time I've seen the video. My life exploded late in 2007, and there's a good 5 - 10 years I don't have any recollection of, but this I do remember as a great thing during a whole load of darkness. Thank you Bruce for that.

@kricklin

I know, right? I love the song too and I wondered how I missed this - very well done, BTW - video.

@Lou-fu7bo

Bruce is simply big Singer, composer And lyrics writer.. Or simply writter And poet? Simply The Boss. His concerts are full of energy, he is giving a, lot of energy from stage to the his fans And his concerts are usually 3-4 hours... Unbelieving

@mariarohmer2374

As someone whose life also exploded many years ago I can relate.
