Adam Raised a Cain
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the summer that I was baptized
My father held me to his side
As they put me into the water
He said how on that day I cried

We were prisoners of love, a love in chains
He was standin' in the door, I was standin' in the rain
With the same hot blood burning in our veins
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)

All of the old faces
Asked you why you're back
They fit you with position
And the keys to your daddy's Cadillac

In the darkness of your room
Your mother calls you by your true name
You remember the faces, the places, the names
You know it's never over, it's relentless as the rain
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)

In the Bible Cain slew Abel
And East of Eden mama he was cast
You're born into this life paying
For the sins of somebody else's past

Well Daddy worked his whole life for nothing but the pain
Now he walks these empty rooms looking for something to blame
You inherit the sins, you inherit the flames
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)

Lost but not forgotten, from the dark heart of a dream
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)
Adam raised a Cain (yeah)

Oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh oh

Oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh oh (hey)

Oh oh, oh oh oh oh (hey)
Oh oh, oh oh oh oh (hey)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's song "Adam Raised A Cain" are filled with powerful metaphors and symbols. The song begins with the singer recalling the day he was baptized, where his father held him close as they went into the water. However, it is clear that this was no ordinary baptism, as the father states that he cried on that day. This sets the tone for the rest of the song, which is about the weight and burden of inherited sin.

The song uses the story of Cain and Abel from the Bible as a metaphor for the theme of inherited sin. Cain famously killed his brother Abel, and as a result, was cast out of Eden. The singer of the song asserts that we are all born into this world paying for the sins of our parent's past. He describes himself and his father as being prisoners of love in chains, and the same hot blood burning in their veins. The chorus asserts that "Adam raised a Cain", suggesting that the sins of the father have been passed down to the son.

The final verse of the song brings it all together, showing how the themes of the song apply to the singer's own life. He sings about his father, who worked his whole life for nothing but pain and now walks empty rooms looking for something to blame. The singer asserts that he has inherited the sins of his father and the flames that come with it. The final line of the song, "Adam raised a Cain", repeats once again, driving home the theme of the inherited burden of sin.

That line "You're born into this life paying for the sins of somebody else's past." Really gets to me. I know this song is from a male perspective, but when my mother died when I was 9, I was left with my dad. He often drank too much and beat me up. Called me useless, ugly, bastard and that I would amount to nothing. He never called me by my name it was always 'it.' Which, until I read a book called A Child Called It, I thought it was a term of endearment!
I put up with his abuse until I ran off at 15. But it wasn't until I was 30 that I found out I wasn't my fathers child. My mother had an affair and I was the result. I have spent from the age of 19 on anti depressants, so many suicide attempts, drinking heavily etc. I'm now 50 and still on anti depressants. But don't drink anymore.
But I didn't know, it wasn't my bloody fault. So Bruce, here's an English poem by Philip Larkin Called This Be The Verse. It says everything and how we are all products of our childhoods.

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

First time seeing this. That man is the balls. His emotional songwriting, guitar playing, and fierce commitment to being in the moment mean it all.

I would love it if the Paramount Theatre show were released on CD and Vinyl. Darkness on the Edge of Town is a phenomenal album. The lyrics are dark, and the band is mighty. Hearing the album live in its entirety is the best medicine

This is a song that relates to my father and I. I always loved him until I realized he wasn't ever going to love me.
