So Juorn Er

This whole album, a masterpiece, one of my deserted island picks, has stood the test of time. I listen to it now, as frequently as I did when I first discovered it back in the 1980's. This band ranks up there with Return to Forever, Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra. It may not have been a front line fighting unit, like those bands (they were all straight out of the Miles Davis school of musical upheaval), but they were the best of the flanking groups, IMO. Bruford did have it's Miles Davis connection however, through Allan Holdsworth who, of course, was a principle player and composer in Tony Williams' Lifetime (Tony being the drummer for one of Miles' most pivotal and impactful musical periods).

Below Average Joe

No matter how cranky he can be, this album made me a Jeff Berlin fan for life. Dude damn near makes a fretted bass sound fretless.

Mike Chessin

the bass solo from 2:18 thru 2:47 is sublime. I dare anybody to listen to that just once

Boogieman

Monumental album. The 4 best musicians.

Still managed to hold on to the vinyl after all these years and several moves. Haven't heard this in some time. I have to admit, going back and listening to this tune now, Dave Stewart's comping during Jeff's solo makes it work so well, harmonically.

Dace Stewart is one my favorite keyboard players and mentors gives the harmonic structure to this song and to the entire album. He plays a Yamaha piano , prophet 5 synthesizers and a mini moog model d.

Kurt Richter

Just realized the same thing. Bill's other albums aren't, in my opinion, anywhere near as sonorous as this one. They're great, but they feel like rhythm tracks without a firm foundation. Amazing, phenomenal rhythm tracks, but my musical upbringing and foundation really long for that underpinning that the gorgeous Prophet brings to the mix!

Hermoso recuerdo de mi adolescencia, ya se veía venir un Allan Holdsworth de otro mundo, maravillosa música.

So many good jazz bass players out there, indeed. Might as well add a few to the list, Eddie Gomez, Bruce Gertz, Brian Bromberg, Eberhard Weber.
