Act Naturally
Buck Owens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They're gonna put me in the movies
They're gonna make a big star out of me
We'll make a film about a man that's sad and lonely
And all I gotta do is act naturally

Well, I'll bet you I'ma gonna be a big star
Might win an Oscar you can't never tell
The movie's gonna make me a big star
'Cause I can play the part so well

Well, I hope you come to see me in the movie
Then I know that you will plainly see
The biggest fool that's ever hit the big time
And all I gotta do is act naturally

We'll make a scene about a man that's sad and lonely
And begging down upon his bended knee
I'll play the part but I won't need rehearsin'
All I'll have to do is act naturally

Well, I'll bet you I'ma gonna be a big star
Might win an Oscar you can't never tell
The movie's gonna make me a big star
'Cause I can play the part so well

Well, I hope you come to see me in the movie
Then I'll know that you will plainly see

The biggest fool that's ever hit the big time
And all I gotta do is act naturally

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Buck Owensโ€™s song โ€œAct Naturallyโ€ talk about a person who is about to become a movie star, but only by putting on an act or by acting naturally. The singer is happy about the prospect of fame but laments about the fact that he will portray a sad, lonely man in the movie. The lyrics are optimistic in tone as the singer believes he could potentially win an Oscar for his performance, and he's good at playing the part naturally.

The chorus, โ€œAll I gotta do is act naturally,โ€ is an interesting line as it appears paradoxical. The natural thing to do for most people is to be themselves, but the singer wants to be someone else entirely- a sad, lonely man. Moreover, the singer acknowledges that he will be a fool or an imposter, and that his success in the movie industry will be based on his ability to portray someone else.

The lyrics also make us question whether the movie industry is real or fake. While the singer is happy about his imminent stardom, he is painfully aware of the fact that itโ€™s all a big act. The song highlights the idea that what we see in movies may not always be true, and that actors are putting on a faรงade to portray a particular character, despite their actual lives being different.

A lot of people who watched Hee Haw didnโ€™t realize that Buck was a major country star going back to the 50โ€™s. They only saw the โ€œgoofyโ€ side of him as Roy Clarkโ€™s sidekick. The Buckaroos were a great band.

My tattoo โ€˜Together Againโ€™ the Buck Owens song in memory of my Nan and grandad who met through listening and playing these wonderful songs reminds me of them, who are now together again โค๏ธ ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ
