Wings
Buckley (Tim) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Although you've spoken many times before
A sight of birth he leaves you by a door
And now you know he doesn't understand
And all you need is the warmth of his hand

And if he'd smile your loving blood would dance
One silent kiss leaves you in a trance
And now you know you cannot live alone
But you will find your future is unknown

One day the questions rise, on wings of chance you fly
And on that day your laughs and tears will die
And fall as free as seabirds climb the skies
And you will love when love comes your way

And when it comes there's nothing more to say
And now you know he doesn't understand

And now you know you don't need his hand
One day the questions die, on wings of chance you fly

Overall Meaning

In Buckley Tim's song, "Wings," the lyrics depict a tale of a woman who has been abandoned by the man she loves. The opening verses reveal that despite having verbal communication in the past, the man leaves the woman outside a door after the birth of their child. The woman realizes that the man doesn't understand her need for his love and warmth. She yearns for his affection but knows that it's futile as he doesn't reciprocate the same emotions.

The song then takes a turn as it moves towards a more optimistic outlook. The lyrics explain that love will eventually come her way and when it does, it will bring an end to all her doubts and questions. The woman will finally be able to let go of all the pain and sorrow that she carries with her. The song ends on a hopeful note as the woman takes flight on the wings of chance, free from the burdens of the past.

The song "Wings" by Buckley Tim was inspired by a poem written by Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet. The song was included in Buckley Tim's album "Happy Sad," which was released in 1969. It is considered to be one of the most iconic songs by Buckley Tim.

52 years and still one of the better love songs ever recorded

If you are dissapointed with this song then maybe Tim Buckley isn't your cup of tea. This song transports me to so many places. Such an awesome song and I'm not even a 60s person. I grew up during the 80s.

David Wright Smith

I got this first time around in the 60's...and to this day I still love it as much..

To be fair every Tim Buckley album was different, so this really isn't a great representation of the artist as a whole. He seemed to stepping stone from one sound to another with each album. Don't get me wrong, I love this song as an example of his early sound, but by the time you get to Star Sailor Tim has morphed into a completely different artist. So, if you don't like this song try some of his other music I'd say.

Unlike many overdone orchestrations in this era, the strings (by Jack Nitzsche) work here. Add depth to Tim's precocious but sweet lyric. My favorite song off his debut.

I grew up hearing Tim Buckley's music. Some songs really hit me hard, love his stuff

Tim was a fantastic talent and the version of this tune by the Common Market ( actually the Liverpool Five) was a wonderful tribute . Well worth checking out on You Tube.

RONALD POKATILOFF

this is tim's best song, with the background strings!  notice how he slowly raises his voice to simulate birds soaring upward, and you have the softer part. You should hear Jamie clark on his early songs like I BELIEVE. He is the best pop singer.
