Guy is known for his showmanship; for example, he plays with drumsticks and walks into the audience whilst playing, the latter being a gimmick he picked up from a local blues guitarist at an early age (joining or leaping into the audience has also long been common in both American popular and gospel music, as in the earlier work of Big Jay McNeely or the Dixie Hummingbirds).
Guy grew up in Louisiana where he learned to play guitar. In the early 1950s he began performing with bands in Baton Rouge. Soon after moving to Chicago in 1957, Guy fell under the influence of "Mighty" Muddy Waters. In 1958 he won a record contract with Artistic Records after beating the West Side guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush in a "Head Cutting Contest" at the Blue Flame Club. Soon afterwards he recorded for the Cobra label.
In the early 1960s, Guy was a session guitarist for Chess Records. He recorded on Junior Wells sessions for Delmark Records under the pseudonym Friendly Chap in 1965 and 1966. His career took off during a blues revival period in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was sparked by Eric Clapton's request that Guy be part of the '24 nights' all-star blues guitar lineup at London's Royal Albert Hall and Guy's subsequent signing with Silvertone Records.

Did somebody mistreat you
Well I know that you're holdin' back
You got a lot more love than that
Did somebody make a fool out of you
Did somebody make a foolout of you
Has somebody mistreated you -Oh, yeah.
Did somebody tear you all apart
I know you been treated bad
But you don't have to look so sad
Did somebody make a fool out of you
I know it's hard to love someone again
When somebody has torn you all apart
But come on and let yourself go
And don't think about it anymore
I know there's still
a whole lot of lovin' in your heart
Buddy Guy’s song “Did Somebody Make a Fool Out of You?” is a soulful ballad in which Guy sings about someone who has been mistreated and had their heart broken. The song seems to be aimed at someone who is hesitant to love again because of the hurt they’ve experienced in the past. Guy emphasizes that this person has a lot of love to give and encourages them to let go of their past hurt and embrace the love that is still in their heart.
The first verse sets the tone for the song, as Guy asks if someone has made a fool out of the listener and mistreated them. He acknowledges that the listener is holding back and not showing all the love they have to offer. In the second verse, Guy asks if someone has “run away” with the listener's heart and torn them apart. He acknowledges that the listener has been treated badly, but he urges them not to look so sad.
The chorus repeats the question if somebody has made a fool out of the listener and mistreated them. Guy then addresses the pain of being hurt by someone and how difficult it can be to love again. He encourages the listener to “let yourself go” and not think about the hurt they’ve experienced. The song ends with Guy affirming that there is still “a whole lot of lovin’” in the listener's heart.
Overall, Guy’s “Did Somebody Make a Fool Out of You?” is a heartfelt and empathetic song about healing from heartbreak and moving forward with love.
