Guy is known for his showmanship; for example, he plays with drumsticks and walks into the audience whilst playing, the latter being a gimmick he picked up from a local blues guitarist at an early age (joining or leaping into the audience has also long been common in both American popular and gospel music, as in the earlier work of Big Jay McNeely or the Dixie Hummingbirds).
Guy grew up in Louisiana where he learned to play guitar. In the early 1950s he began performing with bands in Baton Rouge. Soon after moving to Chicago in 1957, Guy fell under the influence of "Mighty" Muddy Waters. In 1958 he won a record contract with Artistic Records after beating the West Side guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush in a "Head Cutting Contest" at the Blue Flame Club. Soon afterwards he recorded for the Cobra label.
In the early 1960s, Guy was a session guitarist for Chess Records. He recorded on Junior Wells sessions for Delmark Records under the pseudonym Friendly Chap in 1965 and 1966. His career took off during a blues revival period in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was sparked by Eric Clapton's request that Guy be part of the '24 nights' all-star blues guitar lineup at London's Royal Albert Hall and Guy's subsequent signing with Silvertone Records.

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I'll show them to you and you'll see them shine
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Until the break of day, let me see you make him smile
And you're the best thing that he's ever seen
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he's standing in front of you
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead
I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still
The song Lay Lady Lay by Buddy Guy featuring Anthony Hamilton and Robert Randolph is a cover of Bob Dylan's 1969 ballad. The lyrics describe a man inviting a woman to lay across his big brass bed and promising to show her the dizzying array of colors that exist in her mind. The man urges the woman to stay with him until the break of day to make her man smile. The woman's man has dirty clothes, but clean hands, and she is the best thing he has ever seen. The second verse encourages the woman to stay with the man she loves, enjoying the pleasures of life with him. The man desires to see the woman in the morning light and reach for her in the night, hoping she will stay with him while the night lasts.
The lyrics of this song emphasize passionate romance and love. A woman is offered a respite from everyday life to indulge in her fantasies with her partner. The romantic vibe is enhanced by gorgeous instrumentation and heart-warming vocals by Anthony Hamilton and Robert Randolph. The brass bed mentioned in the lyrics is symbolic of grandiose luxury and treasure. The song implies that love is a valuable treasure that should be enjoyed to the fullest. The unconventional chords used in the song further emphasize the need to step out of one's comfort zone and experience new things.
