Dragon
Built By Titan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was younger, I had a dragon
We would fly away to places you can't imagine
And this is a story on a lonely island
With a boy who'd found a way to become a lion

On our way to London, up on the tower
We would spend our nights and days burning the hours
Oh, I remember as I looked in the mirror
Saw I was brave enough this time as I came nearer

Sometimes you gotta stand for something
Sometimes you gotta stand your ground
So I'll keep my head up, I'll keep my head up, I'll keep my head up

I got the fire, I got the fire, I got the fire
I got the fire this time
I'll take it higher, I'll take it higher
'Cause I got the fire, fire

Under the ocean, I found a treasure
It was my heart, not gold or silver that you could measure
Just a king of my castle, going to battle
Ain't no giant here too tall I couldn't handle

Sometimes you gotta stand for something
Sometimes you gotta stand your ground
So I'll keep my head up, I'll keep my head up, I'll keep my head up

I got the fire, I got the fire, I got the fire
I got the fire this time
I'll take it higher, I'll take it higher
'Cause I got the fire, fire

See the stars that align at night
Like the distance between your eyes
It's the lightning I feel inside
Tell me that ain't magic

Hear the horses running wild
To the first steps of a child
Feel the thunder with all her might
Tell me that ain't magic

Don't tell me it ain't real
So tell me it ain't true
'Cause I see the fire
The fire in you

Don't tell me it ain't real
So tell me it ain't true
'Cause I see the fire
The fire in you

Fire, I got the fire, I got the fire
I got the fire this time

I'll take it higher, I'll take it higher
'Cause I got the fire, fire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Dragon" by Built By Titan depict a nostalgic and empowering story. The song starts off with the singer reminiscing about their childhood when they had a dragon, symbolizing a source of imagination and adventure. Together, they would embark on incredible journeys to unimaginable places. However, the story takes a twist as the singer finds themselves on a lonely island, symbolizing isolation and longing. Despite this, they have discovered a way to transform themselves into a lion, representing strength and courage.

The lyrics continue to describe the singer's journey to London, where they would spend endless hours on the tower, perhaps metaphorically referring to a place where dreams and ambitions are nurtured. Looking in the mirror, they realize that they have become braver and more determined. This highlights the power of self-reflection and personal growth.

The chorus emphasizes the importance of standing for something and standing one's ground. It encourages maintaining a positive attitude and keeping one's head up even in challenging times. The repetition and emphasis on having "the fire" symbolizes a burning passion, drive, and determination to overcome obstacles.

The second verse introduces a different setting, under the ocean, where the singer discovers a treasure: their own heart. This signifies the realization that personal worth and fulfillment are more valuable than material possessions or external measures of success. They also affirm their ability to handle any challenge, no matter how tall or daunting.

The bridge of the song celebrates the magic and wonder of the world. The alignment of the stars, the lightning, the pounding hooves of horses, and the thunder all represent the awe-inspiring forces of nature. These elements reinforce the belief in something greater and more extraordinary. The lyrics express the desire to see and acknowledge the fire, passion, and potential within others.

Overall, "Dragon" is a song that combines nostalgia, self-reflection, and resilience. It encourages listeners to believe in themselves, embrace their inner fire, and stand strong in the face of adversity.

Here’s a poem I wrote listening to this song, I hope this makes someone remember their never alone.

When I was younger, I had a dragon.

You couldn’t see me but I was there, you couldn’t hold me but I could hold you.
You couldn’t ride me but I would carry you anyways.
Even though we grew apart as you got older know I’m still here, waiting for you to call on me again.
I will never leave you, even if you yell and scream and breathe fire of your own at me, even if you flash your teeth and rake your claws against my wings.
I won’t leave you for your ferocious heart and fire is mine as well, your wings are the same that sit upon my back and your claws are the same that grip mountains and claw the sky.
I taught you how to be a dragon in a world where we are nothing but stories.
They should not speak of us like fables, for you are proof we exist.
Your eyes are like embers burning in the fireplace and your tenacity and strength can rival even the strongest of warriors.
We are the same, dragon and man burned together by hard ships and downfalls, because every dragon falls when they’re learning to fly and when your ready, when your take that step off the nest and spread your wings, when you can fly across oceans and mountain peaks, then I’ll know it’s time to leave.

But don’t worry, I’ll come back to visit, all you have to do is call and I will come.

"There were dragons when I was a boy.

Some say they crawled back into the sea, leaving not a bone nor a fang for men to remember them by.

Others say they were nothing but folktales to begin with.

But legend says that when the ground quakes, or lava spews from the earth . . .

It’s the dragons, letting us know they’re still here."

i’m crying my eyes out rn. this reminds me so much of httyd. something my childhood memories will always have. the movies and franchise that i became badly addicted to from the age of 8. the dragons were something. really something. it was something inside of me when i watched that first movie and i related so much to a single animated character. i remember watching the first movie and thinking “i want to fly dragons” and failing to comprehend that they “weren’t real”. i even got my mum when she’d pray for me at night, to ask god for me to dream about flying toothless through fields of blueberries and waterfalls. even as a young kid i wanted nothing more but to be apart of it. apart of this world so far away yet oh so close to my heart. berk. hiccup. the dragons. it’s as if i’d escaped to this place of wonder and imagination and excitement and i never wanted to leave. but as i grew older i began to leave it behind. thinking, this is just a small part of life in which won’t matter as a young adult. i was oh so wrong. now as a teen i find myself looking deep into these beautiful films and series and never so much have a related to a character in hiccup. a human who only wants the good for everyone around. a person who has never done anything to hurt anyone and yet, still receives hate and bullying from his peers. but i learnt from him to never give up. to try your best to succeed even when you’re “the wimp of the town”. because someday, after all your hard work, you’ll go from the wimp to the hero, chief and accepted. how to train your dragon showed me the importance of friendship and love and that if someone really means something to you, you’d do everything in your power to keep them out of harms way. it showed me that it’s okay to be different. it’s okay to not be like everyone else and stay outside the box because as what goes with hiccup, being the same as everyone else gets you no where. if he didn’t save toothless and killed dragons like everyone else, where would he be? a great leader? i think not. i learnt that whenever you lose something, you always gain something better in return. that you should never stop fighting for what you believe in. in conclusion, the decade of this incredible series has come to an end. 10 years of berk and saving dragons. from the first film to the last i’ll never forget that this series will always be in my heart and it’ll be there until forever.

As a HTTYD fan myself, I understand u. Just hoping u see that love is more than anything that this world says it is. This may sound religious, but it's not, it's serious, truth: just read 1 Corinthians 13, in the Bible. But seriously, I totally understand that as a huge fan myself. HTTYD was my dream life I guess. I've grown quite a bit, yet the HTTYD movies and series is still the best, least agenda pushing, most innocent and inspiring story put onto the screen I have seen
