Where Have You Been
Burgess Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I can barely see through to you
Where has all your light gone to
I can hardly recognise the colour of your eyes
Where have you gone
Where have you gone
Sitting on the edge of my bed
The tears that you cry are cold
You’re nothing but bone
You used to shout so loud
When something was wrong
Now silence is your only song
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me this way
Don’t leave me
And all of the dreams you held
That you never told anyone else
Please don’t say they’re gone
Don’t say they’re gone
You’ve taken the best part of me
Without you I cannot be free
Without you I almost cease to be
You have left me with scars
I don’t know what to do with
You have left me with scars
I don’t know what to do with
You’ve left me
You’ve left me with scars
You’ve left me
Where have you gone my friend
Where have you gone
Where have you gone
In the song "Where have you been" by Burgess, the opening lines express a sense of loss and confusion towards a friend who seems to have changed or drifted away. The singer is searching for their friend, wondering where their light and essence have disappeared to, struggling to recognize the friend they once knew. This longing and uncertainty are depicted through the repeated questioning of "Where have you gone," emphasizing the emotional distance that has come between them.
As the song progresses, the imagery shifts to a more intimate and vulnerable scene of the friend sitting on the edge of the bed, visibly upset with red eyes from crying. The contrast between their previous loud expressions of distress and the current silence speaks to a drastic change in their behavior and emotional state. The singer pleads for them not to leave in this state, highlighting the fear of losing their connection and the desire for the friend to stay despite the pain and sadness they are experiencing.
The lyrics further delve into the friend's inner world, revealing that they hold dreams and aspirations that have never been shared with anyone else. The singer implores the friend not to give up on these dreams, emphasizing the significance of holding onto hope and maintaining a sense of self amidst adversity. The plea to not declare these dreams as gone suggests a plea for the friend to hold onto their sense of identity and purpose, despite the challenges they may be facing.
The emotional impact of the friend's absence is illustrated through the declaration that they have taken the best part of the singer, leaving them feeling incomplete and constrained. The scars left behind by the friend's departure represent the emotional wounds and struggles that the singer now must grapple with. The repeated refrain of being left with scars underscores the lasting impact of the friend's absence, emphasizing the singer's sense of loss and disorientation. The song ends with a repeated cry for the friend, questioning once again where they have gone, encapsulating the longing and emptiness that pervades the singer's experience.

The way Adam handled Makayla to make sure she wasn't too afraid was amazing. He was focused and the acting was just amazing. I truly love this show so much for the stories they tell.

That's why I loved both of these characters and actors. They have everything down to a tee and they work together to figure out their scenes together also as a couple or individuals they shine.

I have severe ptsd, have had it 11+ years. I’ve done a lot of therapy, take meds and have a service dog. I don’t have these kinds of flashbacks as often as I used to but Kim portrays them incredibly well. To me it didn’t feel like mockery as some portrayals of mental health episodes can feel on tv. I have so much respect for her to be able to do this intense emotional scene. And Adam was excellent also. Overall just an amazing scene. Keep up the good work you guys and thank you for showing an accurate portrayal of how difficult and real ptsd is

I love how they use what she's been through to help others as well. Adam shows how closed he pays attention and loves Kim.

Marina was perfect in this episode, as it always is! She rocks. I felt Kim’s fear, despair and pain. What an amazing actress! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Adam’s despair not knowing what to do to help was also very essential for the realism of the scene. I was very emotional with the whole episode. I’m glad Kim finally accepted help.💛
