U.S.S.A.!
U.S.S.A.!

Overall Meaning

The Butthole Surfers's song "U.S.S.A." is a scathing commentary on the United States government and its actions both domestically and internationally. The use of the acronym "U.S.S.A." instead of "U.S.A." implies that the country operates more like a Soviet-style dictatorship than a democracy, with the lyrics pointing out the hypocrisy and corruption within the government. The song begins with a reiteration of the acronym, which acts as a call to arms for listeners to pay attention to the message being conveyed.

As the song progresses, the lyrics become more specific in their critique, referencing political scandals like the Iran-Contra affair and the alleged CIA involvement in drug trafficking. The line "Police state, it ain't that great" highlights the increasing militarization of law enforcement and the erosion of civil liberties. Additionally, lyrics like "We're the Land of the Free/and the Home of the Grave" illustrate the dark consequences of U.S. foreign policy and military intervention.

Overall, "U.S.S.A." is a powerful critique of American politics and society, highlighting the dangers of unchecked government power and corruption. The Butthole Surfers were known for their irreverent and subversive music, and this song is a prime example of their willingness to push the boundaries of what was socially acceptable at the time.
