Béatrice has played the piano since the age of three, which was initiated by her mother, a professional pianist. She later played as a keyboardist in the post-hardcore band December Strikes First when she was 15 years old. In March 2007, after five years of music education, she started composing her own songs.
After a brief stint as keyboardist for Bonjour Brumaire, a French-Canadian Indie Rock/Indie Pop band, she released her solo debut album Cœur de pirate in 2008 on the Québécois independent record label Grosse Boîte. The album found much critical acclaim and was subsequently nominated for Francophone Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards.
Flume
Cœur de Pirate Lyrics

It's enough
I wear my garment so it shows
Now you know
Only love is all maroon
Gluey feathers on a flume
Sky is womb and she's the moon
I am my mother on the wall
With us all
I move in water, shore to shore
Nothing's more
Only love is all maroon
Lapping lakes like leery loons
Leaving rope burns, reddish ruse
Only love is all maroon
Gluey feathers on a flume
Sky is womb and she's the moon
The lyrics of Cœur de Pirate's song Flume contain a poetic and introspective exploration of identity and love. The first verse, "I am my mother's only one, it's enough," suggests a strong connection with her mother, a sense of being the only one who truly understands her. The line "I wear my garment so it shows, now you know" can be interpreted as an expression of vulnerability and openness, as if she is revealing her true self to someone.
The second verse delves into the theme of love, describing it as "all maroon," a color associated with passion and intensity. The imagery of "gluey feathers on a flume" can evoke a sense of fragility and delicacy, perhaps symbolizing the vulnerability that comes with love. The following line, "Sky is womb and she's the moon," portrays a deep connection between the vastness of the universe and the nurturing, comforting presence of love.
The third verse reiterates the connection with her mother, stating "I am my mother on the wall, with us all." It suggests a sense of shared experiences and a continuation of her mother's influence. The line "I move in water, shore to shore, nothing's more" can be seen as a metaphor for the fluidity of life and the constant changes that one goes through. It could also signify the search for stability and contentment, ultimately finding that love is the most important thing.
Overall, the lyrics of Flume convey a contemplative exploration of identity, the power of love, and the connection to one's roots and influences.
