Staton sang with the Jewell Gospel Trio and as teenagers, they toured the traditional gospel circuit in the 1950s with The Soul Stirrers, C. L. Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson. They recorded several sides for Nashbro, Apollo[disambiguation needed ], and Savoy Records between 1953 and 1963, before launching a solo career in 1968.
She had 16 R&B hits for Fame Studios and received Grammy nominations for cover versions of country standards. In 1975 she started working with disco producer Dave Crawford and had hits "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Victim". Also, The Mighty Majors ("You Can Never Go Back") was her backup band once on the road.
In 1982 she returned to gospel forming Beracah Ministries with her husband John Sussewell. In 1991 she had a top 10 UK hit as The Source featuring Candi Staton with dance track "You Got The Love".
In 2004 when Sex and the City ended its successful six-year run, the last song played on that show was "You Got the Love" with Sarah Jessica Parker walking down New York City streets and talking about the endless relationship with herself.
Mr. And Mrs. Untrue

Hotel is kind of crowded tonight
Oh I'd hate to meet someone we know
And force a smile when we don't want to be polite
Take the elevator up
And in a little while I will follow you
But first go inside and sign us in as Mr. and Mrs. Untrue
Pull your boots off baby
Ain't no one gonna see us now
All the comforts of home
With no responsibility no how I...oh no
What sweet memories we've made
Without a single I love you
And here we are again baby
Just Mr. and Mrs. Untrue (oh yeah)
Turn the television down and come on over here
I don't want to see a thing
I just want to hold you near
Keep me close to you
Until the day love makes you Whole
And then I'm all alone
To face me going home
Put your shades on Johnny
Please don't slam that door (no baby)
You go first through the lobby, walk a block, take a cab
Just like before
See you in a week
And don't you forget me
Room 5502
And until the next time darling
We're Mr. and Mrs. Untrue
Until, until the next time when we're Mr. and Mrs. Untrue
The song "Mr. and Mrs. Untrue" by Candi Staton tells the story of two people who are having an affair and sneaking around to be together. The lyrics describe the secrecy and shame of their relationship, as they worry about being caught by someone they know. They use fake identities to check into a hotel room and spend time together without any responsibilities or commitments. The chorus repeats the phrase "Mr. and Mrs. Untrue" to highlight the idea that they are not being honest with anyone, including each other.
The use of shades or sunglasses is a recurring motif throughout the song, representing the concealment of their actions and emotions. The singer asks her partner to put on his shades to avoid being recognized, and also refers to herself as "all alone" when he leaves without saying goodbye. The lyrics suggest that the two are not truly in love, as they do not say "I love you" to each other, but instead focus on the physical pleasure and escape that their affair provides.
Overall, "Mr. and Mrs. Untrue" is a melancholic reflection on the consequences of infidelity and the pain of hiding one's true self. It portrays a sense of shame and regret, while also acknowledging the irresistible temptation of forbidden love.
