Sandcastles
Cable Ties Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I built a green house
"Why not red?"
I'll paint it again
"Don't listen to them"
I tried my best but I guess
"Just don't get out of bed"
I hear what you're saying
"You're wrong, I'm right"
I partly agree
"I've won this fight"
But it's just more complicated than we can see

You don't do anything because you know that people like you they
Just don't do anything at all but tear each other down
You don't do anything because you know that people like you they
Just don't do anything at all but tear each other down

You get your power
By always being right
You shift with the goal posts from side to side
What kind of movement
Do you hope to make
By burning everyone who doesn't speak the same?

You don't do anything because you know that people like you they
Just don't do anything at all but tear each other down
You don't do anything because you know that people like you they
Just don't do anything at all but tear each other down

But tear each other down
But tear each other down
You don't do anything because (but tear each other down)
You don't do anything (but tear each other down)
You don't do anything because (but tear each other down)
You don't do anything (but tear each other down)
You don't do anything because (but tear each other down)
You don't do anything (but tear each other down)
You don't do anything because (but tear each other down)
You don't do anything (but tear each other down)
You don't do anything because

You never stopped kicking down sandcastles (you don't do anything)
You never stopped kicking down sandcastles (you don't do anything)
You never stopped kicking down sandcastles (you don't do anything)
You never stopped kicking down sandcastles (you don't do anything)
You never stopped kicking down sandcastles (you don't do anything)
You never stopped kicking down sandcastles (you don't do anything)
You never stopped kicking down sandcastles (you don't do anything)
You never stopped kicking down sandcastles

You don't do anything because you know that people like you they
Just don't do anything at all but tear each other down
You don't do anything because you know that people like you they
Just don't do anything at all but tear each other down

You don't do anything because you know that people like you they
Just don't do anything at all but tear each other down

You don't do anything because you know that people like you they
Just don't do anything at all but tear each other down

Overall Meaning

The song Sandcastles by Cable Ties is a commentary on the destructive nature of people who tear each other down instead of building each other up. The lyrics speak to the idea of working hard to build something, like a greenhouse, only to have someone else criticize it for not being the right color, causing the builder to question their efforts. The song features a back and forth dialogue between two opposing viewpoints, with one person claiming to always be right and the other acknowledging the complexity of the situation.

The refrain repeats the line "You don't do anything because you know that people like you they just don't do anything at all but tear each other down," implying that negative people who never take action are content to simply tear others down instead of working towards a better future. The lyrics express frustration with people who gain power through always being right and shifting the goalposts to suit their needs, especially those who burn anyone who doesn't conform to their ideas.

The song ultimately laments the fact that these types of people never stop kicking down sandcastles, never working towards anything positive or constructive. It is a call to action to identify and challenge these negative forces in order to build a better future.

I heard him praising them in a "discussion" with Johnny Rotten/Lydon and other punk rock founders – if involving John can properly be called a discussion, lol.

@simonsays2809

@@brianjones3191 Henry did a far better job of making sense. 🤦‍♂️ Having said that p.i.l was the first band I ever really got into. It was very much John style that he's talking over top of everyone & then on the verge of tears, in a matter of minutes 😔

THANK YOU HENRY ROLLINS FOR INTRODUCING ME TO THE CABLE TIES!

@TheGenbox2

Love this sound / music : exciting, fresh and authentic. And it's the lyrical authenticity, that at 58 yrs, that i can still get down with, even if aged body forces a need to go to bed early ! Love the bassist's fatigued nonchalant dissociated contempt at not to even looking a bit excited, while he lets the woman have there say! Love that flash in her lead singer's eye's and teeth, and the drummer's habituated down of mouth! Says it all! Thanks everyone for putting it out here (or there). All the best!
