Teenage Hands
Cage Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Picked you up late after school
All your friends think I'm uber cool
Beat down dudes treat you cold
Not too tough to fuck up a seventeen year old
Your daddy asked me my age in front of you
Lied through my teeth, I said I'm twenty-two

YOUR LITTLE TEENAGE HANDS
YOUR LITTLE TEENAGE HANDS
YOUR LITTLE TEENAGE HANDS
YOUR STUPID LITTLE TEENAGE HANDS

Line 'em up, give 'em a gun, cook their brain
Cut their hair down and make them look the same
Now you in the business of shooting Arabs
Two years ago you were true for daring
Kissing on her neck and squeezing her hand
Like the lungs in your chest trying to breathe in sand
Knife in your stomach and they shut the van door
So you can find out they've got special plans for -

YOUR LITTLE TEENAGE HANDS
YOUR LITTLE TEENAGE HANDS

YOUR LITTLE TEENAGE HANDS
YOUR STUPID LITTLE TEENAGE HANDS

Overall Meaning

The song "Teenage Hands" by Cage explores the theme of teenage rebellion and susceptibility to negative influences. The first verse reveals the singer's relationship with a seventeen-year-old girl whose father disapproves of him, perhaps due to their age difference. The singer, however, tries to fit in with his girl's friends, appearing "uber cool" to them. Meanwhile, he has a confrontational relationship with other men who are violent towards him. The chorus, "Your little teenage hands...your stupid little teenage hands" seems to suggest that the singer sees the girl as naive and easily led astray by harmful influences.

In the second verse, the lyrics take a darker turn. The singer addresses unidentified parties who are complicit in a system that sends young people to fight in wars they don't understand. The lines "Line 'em up, give 'em a gun, cook their brain/ Cut their hair down and make them look the same" hint at military drills and the use of propaganda to deindividualize soldiers. The lyrics then describe a horrific scene in which a young person is stabbed and kidnapped, likely as part of a terrorist attack. The repetition of the chorus in this context implies that the singer sees a link between the girl's romanticized rebelliousness and the bravery myth of military service that leads to the ultimate sacrifice of young lives.
