Sheep Go To Heaven
Cake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm not feeling alright today
I'm not feeling that great
I'm not catching on fire today
Love has started to fade
I'm not going to smile today
I'm not gonna laugh
You're out living it up today
I've got dues to pay

And the gravedigger puts on the forceps
The stonemason does all the work
The barber can give you a haircut
The carpenter can take you out to lunch

Now I just want to play on my panpipes
I just want to drink me some wine
As soon as you're born you start dyin'
So you might as well have a good time, oh no

Sheep go to heaven
Goats go to hell
Sheep go to heaven
Goats go to hell

I don't wanna go to Sunset Strip
I don't wanna feel the emptiness
Old marquees with stupid band names
I don't wanna go to Sunset Strip

I don't wanna go to Sunset Strip
I don't wanna feel the emptiness
Old marquees with stupid band names
I don't wanna go to Sunset Strip

And the gravedigger puts on the forceps
The stonemason does all the work
The barber can give you a haircut
The carpenter can take you out to lunch

Now, but I just want to play on my panpipes
I just want to drink me some wine
As soon as you're born you start dyin'
So you might as well have a good time, oh no

Sheep go to heaven
Goats go to hell
Sheep go to heaven
Goats go to hell

Sheep go to heaven
Goats go to hell
Sheep go to heaven
Goats go to hell

Sheep go to heaven
Goats go to hell
Sheep go to heaven
Goats go to hell

Sheep go to heaven

Goats go to hell
Sheep go to heaven

Overall Meaning

Cake's song "Sheep Go To Heaven" starts with the singer proclaiming that he's not feeling alright, and that love has started to fade. He has dues to pay, and he's not smiling or laughing. The singer then reflects on different professions such as a gravedigger, stonemason, barber and carpenter, who all have their defined skills but only in some aspect of life. The singer then conveys his desire to ditch his current life and just wants to play on his panpipes and drink wine while reflecting on the fact that as soon as you're born, you start dying, therefore, it's better to enjoy life while you can.

As the song progresses, the singer declares that sheep go to heaven while goats go to hell, perhaps alluding to the distinction that sheep are seen as innocent and pure while goats are often perceived as stubborn and rebellious. Towards the end, the singer proclaims his dislike for the Sunset Strip, the emptiness he feels, and the stupid band names he associates with the place, reinforcing his desire to escape his current situation.

They played this live one time. one side took the role of the sheep and the other the goats, each yelling their respective destination. I was a goat

i can't believe more bands don't use it... I can't think of a single other song other than Crazy Train at the intro I believe that uses it even once.

I loved this album as a kid because it had a big pig on the cover and it made me laugh. It still does today, but the music is also excellent :)

I have only seen Cake twice. First time was in 2004 at a festival (long after they made it big).

Last year I moved to Sacramento, and I found out that Cake is from Sac Town. I was amp’d because they will probably play here when if/when they start another tour. 🤞
