Friend
Cal Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Just friends, but not like before
To think of what we've been and not to kiss again
Seems like pretending it isn't the ending
Two friends drifting apart
Two friends, but one broken heart
We loved, we laughed, we cried, and suddenly love died
In these lyrics from Cal's song "Friend," the singer reflects on a relationship that has transitioned from being lovers to just friends. The first verse acknowledges the shift in their dynamic, explicitly stating "Just friends, lovers no more." The line "but not like before" hints that their friendship now lacks the intimacy and passion that once defined their connection. The singer laments the impossibility of returning to the past, as the idea of revisiting their romantic history without the physical and emotional closeness represented by a kiss feels like a form of denial.
The second verse delves deeper into the emotional toll of this transition, as the singer contemplates the bittersweet reality of their situation. The phrase "To think of what we've been and not to kiss again" emphasizes the sense of loss and nostalgia for the intimacy they shared. The line "Seems like pretending it isn't the ending" acknowledges the facade of normalcy they maintain as friends while grappling with the finality of their romantic relationship. This juxtaposition highlights the complexity of their evolving friendship and the unresolved feelings that linger between them.
The chorus captures the essence of their changing bond, portraying two friends who are slowly drifting apart. Despite the effort to maintain a façade of friendship, the line "but one broken heart" suggests that one of them is still struggling to come to terms with the end of their love story. The singer reminisces about the shared experiences of love, laughter, and tears, underscoring the depth of their connection and the abruptness of its dissolution. The phrase "suddenly love died" starkly conveys the abruptness and finality of their romantic relationship's demise, leaving both parties to navigate the aftermath and redefine their connection.
Overall, Cal's song "Friend" delves into the complexities of transitioning from lovers to friends and the emotional turmoil that accompanies such a shift. The lyrics poignantly capture the melancholy and nostalgia of a relationship's end, as well as the struggle to navigate a new chapter in their connection. Through introspective verses and a wistful chorus, the singer reflects on the inevitability of change, the pain of letting go, and the resilience required to forge a new, albeit different, bond as friends.

Very powerful lyrics, so much meaning in every single sentence. Often with songs I just listen but don't really pay attention to what they're saying. With you Cal, I listen to every. single. word.
