1. Back in the 90s, songwriter Julie Stepanek put an ad in the Village Voice looking for a female bass player. What did she get? Guitarist Dan Crane and the start of a new indie pop band - first as Stephonic, then as Calamine. The band released one ep before going underground in 2001. Julie resurfaced in 2006, releasing the lovely "What We Forgot To Remember". This band is probably best known for performing the theme song to the popular television show Sealab 2021. Their songs are lush, pretty and pure-spun pop. The group writes original songs, has a dedicated following, and its distinctive trademark is the lead vocal work by Julie Stepanek.

Porch
Calamine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's too early for that yet
Find some sunglasses and
Claim a nice spot on the porch
And there we'll wait for dawn to come because it comes for everyone
The night was too long
Lost my bearings out at sea
Telling secrets just to me
So I must wait for dawn to come because it comes for everyone
You thought you'd like to go there
But you didn't give it any thought
When you find yourself in trouble remember what they told you
Amazing how just a little sun can chase away the darkest night
So we must wait for dawn to come because it comes for everyone
The lyrics of Calamine's song Porch are a testament to the healing power of nature and the important role it plays in our lives. The opening lines, "No more questions, It's too early for that yet," set the tone for the rest of the song. It's a call to put aside any worries or concerns and simply enjoy the moment. The suggestion to "find some sunglasses and claim a nice spot on the porch" is a nod to the idea of self-care and taking time to relax.
The chorus of the song, "And there we'll wait for dawn to come because it comes for everyone," is a reminder that no matter what we're going through, the sun will rise again, and a new day will bring with it new opportunities. The lines, "Lost my bearings out at sea, Gas station bathroom mirror/Telling secrets just to me," suggest a sense of disorientation and vulnerability, but also a desire to connect with oneself and find a way forward.
In the end, the lyrics offer a message of hope and resilience. The lines, "Amazing how just a little sun can chase away the darkest night/So we must wait for dawn to come because it comes for everyone," emphasize the importance of staying positive and having faith that things will get better.
