City girls
Cale J.J. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

City girls they're all right
They just want you for the night
But when the morning comes at dawn
City girls they all gone
You know the daylight can be sad
When you feel that you've been had
Only night time brings the price
City girl she thinks it's right

What's a poor boy going to do
If he wants a girl like you
Can't afford no diamond rings
Or all those other fancy things
Only one thing I can give
A song down where you live

I'll sing to you hear the sound
City girl please stay around

Overall Meaning

The song City Girls by J.J. Cale talks about his experience with women in the city. In the beginning, he says that city girls are all right and they just want the pleasure of the night. But, when the morning comes, they're gone. This could be interpreted as a sense of detachment from relationships in the city, as people are often too busy with their lives or uninterested in commitments. Cale highlights the emptiness that comes with these one-night stands, as the daylight can be sad when you feel like you've been had.

In contrast, night time is when the real price is paid. City girls believe that this kind of lifestyle is right, which further showcases their noncommittal nature. Cale references the struggle of a poor boy trying to attract a girl like the city girls he has met. He cannot afford diamond rings or other fancy things; all he can offer is a song down where she lives. He hopes that she'll stay around to hear his music and maybe even form a meaningful connection.

his music kinda makes me feel like I owe him. Just buying his albums doesn't compensate the awesomeness and joy that I get in return. Dear J.J. Cale, I love what you've done, did, and do!
